Does any other city have more outdoor gear shops per capita than Boulder, Colorado? It’s incredible a city the size of Boulder can support so many outdoor gear & apparel stores. Here’s a partial list of gear shops in Boulder (proper):
La Sportiva, Patagonia, Montbell, REI, Himali, Neptune Mountaineering, Backcountry, Black Diamond, Norrona, North Face, Nomad, Arc’Teryx, Cotopaxi, Helly Hansen, Fjallraven, Burton, Prana and Stio. There are plenty of othe bike stores, ski shops and other outdoor apparel shops I left off the list. I’d love to get a Nortona and La Sportiva store in the city where I live.
Happy Trails,
DR

Rich white people and CU trustafarians need $600 fjallraven jacket to grocery shop at Alfalfas.
And there are a lot of people who actually do outdoor stuff.

Flagstaff is about the same, although it has fewer brand-specific stores.

When my husband lived in Boulder in the late 80s he knew one person who left because she wasn’t outdoorsy at all and felt completely out of place. Going hiking is kind of a requirement to live there. And yes, there’s a lot of money in that town.

boulder population: about 100k washington dc population: over 700k
outdoors stores in DC: REI, Arcteryx, Patagonia, Backcountry (they have a brick and mortar retail store here, that's weird to me), and that's it. If you count the close-by DC metro, add The North Face, Casual Adventure Outfitters, Good Wolf Gear. Sierra (another brick and mortar for an online store). Pathetic. ask me why I order nearly everything online that's not at REI.
I'm excluding places like Dick's Sports, Cabela's, LL Bean, Orvis, but they're here too.

There are plenty of outdoor stores in Portland where I live. Especially company stores. Actually, I’m not surprised Backcountry has brick & mortar stores. That’s the same thing Patagonia does with their corporate stores throughout the USA. Heck, you can find REI stores carrying Patagonia apparel just blocks away from Patagonia stores. Backcountry has brick & mortar stores in Utah (2), Chicago, Seattle, Bozeman, Palo Alto, LA, Boulder and DC. I wouldn’t be surprised if they added a Portland store down the road. Happy Trails, DR
