I still have fond memories of two trips I took to the Appalachian Mountains. I explored the area around Bryson City and Asheville, North Carolina. I stayed in a cabin at Nantahala Village while exploring the nearby Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). I never made it back to the area, though I hope to in the near future. An old girlfriend of mine really enjoyed the fall colors near Roanoke, Virginia. It’s a town I’ve been thinking about relocating to in the future. I’ve also heard great thing about Boone, NC; it’s another town I’d like to check out. There are several other towns I’d like to explore in the area. I remember talking with an old Forest Service lifer when I lived in Alaska. When I asked what his favorite area of the country was after working at four different forests, he enthusiastically said it was the Appalachians. He loved the diversity of the forests in Virginia. Here are the best adventure towns in the Appalachians/ Blue Ridge areas according to the readers of Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine. www.blueridgeoutdoors.com/go-outside/top-adventure-towns-2023/Have any of you spent any time at these locations? Happy Trails, DR

Yes, my favorite being outside of Abingdon, Va. with it's proximity to the Mt. Rogers Area. I had an offer to be a fly fishing guide on the South Branch of the Holston and thought about it. Bristol, Va. and Tenn. was out of the question, as was it's other tri-city , Johnson City. Asheville was also very attractive. A better opportunity arose for me outside of Knoxville, close to the Smokies, but once again, couldn't pull the trigger. Roanoke only reminds me of a massive hailstorm on the Blue Ridge Parkway we endured on a bike trip, which started as we were on the overlook on Roanoke Mt. The area where Va., Tenn. and N.C. come together is an outdoor paradise, no doubt. I live in one myself, otherwise it would be more appealing. A town I didn't see on the list was Mountain City, Tenn. which is surrounded by mountains. Roan Mt. is close, the rhododendrons are absolutely spectacular when they bloom.

Yes, one of the reasons I like that area so much is the ecological diversity. Another is how much rain (the Nantahala Nat’l Forest) it gets—-it’s second only to the Pacific Northwest. Mountain City looks nice. Hopefully, I’ll get there and check it out in the near future.
Regards,
