I have a friend in Sweden who wants to come for a "3-4 day backpack" in the Canyonlands He's an experienced backcountry traveler -- very experienced -- but mostly in the North Country. He has what I think of as a common fascination with canyon country that is so otherworldly to many, particularly if you live in Scandinavia! His time window is May 1-9, 2024. He's expecting to fly in from Stockholm and needs transportation to the trailhead and back. I'm encouraging him to fly into Moab and get a shuttle. He is game to go solo unless someone wants to join him -- which I would but can't at that time. Does anyone have any recommendations for trip routes? I've sent him initially to the website and encouraged him to get a permit asap.

Well, the obvious route is the loop or semi-loop in the Needles to take in Elephant Arch and Chesler Park. But it may be hard to get a permit for that.
Is he up on the idea of dry camps and possibly having to carry a couple of days’ worth of water?

rebeccad thanks. Yes, that looks like a popular trip and it top line on the website so I was looking for less traveled options. I would say, yes, he's up for carrying water and any kind of camping situation.

I know there are some folks on here who know the area better than I do, so am hoping a little action here will attract the attention of an actual expert :D

rebeccad I gather Needles won’t disappoint if he can get a permit and doesn’t mind the crowds.

Paul Mags is now based out of Utah, and his site includes some trip reports in the area. I always enjoy reading his posts and reports.

I really enjoyed Salt Creek solo.I would advise him not to consider The Maze.

The Needles are fantastic. Put in for your permit soon. Keep in mind it could be pretty warm in May.
