The Devil’s Path is often considered one of the hardest day hikes in the East. (It can be done as multi day too) I wanted to tackle it in a day having done similar trips such as the Great Range Traverse in the Adirondacks and Presidential Traverse in the Whites in a day. I also wanted to finish my last peak of the Northeast 115 (Hunter Mtn is 1.7mikes off the Devils Path) so I decided to kill two birds with one stone On Sept 7 th after 28 miles, 9,000 vertical feet of climbing, 6 peaks, sweltering humidity, two thunderstorms, and 13.5 hours later I finished the Devils Path in a day and the Northeast 115. For the full TR and lots of photos, visit the link www.tomcatsadventures.com/2023/09/the-devils-path.html?m=1You can also read if interested about the highest peak in the Catskills, Slide Mountain, which I hiked the day before, visit this link below. www.tomcatsadventures.com/2023/09/slide-mountain.html?m=1

That terrain looks extremely challenging! Going by your pictures, I don’t think it’s quite as beautiful as the Great Range and Presidential Traverse, which, if true, would make the hike even more of a suffer fest! Would you say that (about the scenery)?
I’ve never hiked in the Catskills, but have done the 1-day Presidential Traverse. I’ve only done a partial Great Range traverse, which was probably even more beautiful than the Presidential Range, but not the full traverse, because I didn’t know it was a thing at the time. I doubt I’m fit enough to do either right now.

I doubt I’m fit enough to do either right now. I think if I went on a less oppressively humid day it wouldn’t have been too bad. It’s definitely challenging, particularly on the east section with bigger elevation changes between peaks than the Pres and GRT, burly there are gentle stretches as well. The scenery on the DP is not as stunning as the Presi or GRT but it’s a pretty forest with enough vistas to keep it from being too dull. The tstorms kept it interesting too. There was also a little bit of a push coming with finishing the NE115. Hiking Slide the day prior was my first time in the Catskills as well. It reminds me a lot of the Alleghenies in PA since both the Catskills and Alleghenies are dissected plateaus. I think hiking the Catskills is like a cross between the ADK and Alleghenies. More elevation and vegetation like the Adirondacks but still plateau like which makes sense since they lie between the Alleghenies and Adirondacks. The DP is definitely not as photogenic as the Presi or GRT but definitely worth checking out if you are up to task. You can also skip Hunter which is a side trip, do as a multi day, or break it into sections with numerous side trails making shorter loops.
