I'm ready to head back up to echo lake and hike over to Aloha Lake. Just had a couple questions if anyone can answer. Thinking about mid August. Last time I went the skeets were so bad I came back a day early. Anyone know the bug status up that way and, while I'm at it, the snow status? Thank You

Hey Vanderloo, I reserved a permit for Early Aug. I had to get Tamarack for the first night, since Lake of the Woods and Aloha were booked up on the dates I wanted. I expect that there will be skeeters but have no way to predict it for sure. I'll be as ready for them as I can be-- prepare for the worst and hope for the best, I guess. As far as snow, I'm not really sure there either, but I found a trip report from someone who went at the end of June and said that they camped at Lake of the Woods, but did not go to Aloha because of snow. I'd expect the trail to be passable by now, but I could be surprised.

If you're still around, Vanderloo, I wanted to let you know I camped at Tamarack Lake 2 nights (8/7 and 8/8) and day hiked from there to Lake Aloha. I would rate the skeeters as moderate. I used a fair amount of repellent and took a few bites. I talked to a guy on the trail who had camped at the NW end of Aloha and he said that there were no mosquitos there, and that this might have been due to the strong wind the night he camped.
There is no snow on the trail between Echo and Aloha.
