I was invited to hike a portion of the Grand Canyon, but couldn’t see my way to getting the knee to cooperate, so I had to bow out. In place of that, I agreed to meet up with rebeccad and do some car camping and day hiking after her Canyon trip. I drove from home to the Canyon in 2 days, stopping near Wichita Falls the first night (1250 miles) and making it to Tusayan the second night in time for dinner at Pizza & Pasta.
My first order of business the following day was to meet up with Maggi Daly and deliver some goodies to her, in exchange for some delish pretzels she had for me. She also was kind enough as to offer me a free replacement for the sleeping pad I had damaged. I tested my pad for 4 days before leaving home, and all went well. Since I was sleeping on it, inside my car, on the way out, I decided to just leave it inflated. As I drove up in elevation, it must’ve sprung a leak, like the chip bags that over inflate. Anyway, I now had a functioning pad and could continue on with my journey.
I spent a day and a half just enjoying the views of the Canyon before meeting up with BigLoad and Rebecca at the top of Hermit. I took them a cold drink of their own choosing, Carted them off to their lodging and awaited supper.
The next day Rebecca and I headed off to Escalante, Utah for some slot canyon hiking. Zebra, Peekaboo, & Spooky were on the agenda. In Peekaboo, Rebecca managed to sprain her ankle so we retreated to camp and iced her ankle for the rest of that day and all of the next. RICE was our plan. The injury happened on a Sunday, and Tuesday we drove to Capital Reef for pie. Rebecca decided to head home, and I headed off for Blanding, Utah for some Bears Ears exploration.
Wednesday I drove to Kane Gulch ranger station only to discover that Moon House required 4 WD, in addition to a permit. I hiked Mule Canyon for the dwellings. The next day I had Butler Wash all to myself at 10 AM. I saw 2 groups leaving as I was walking in, but there was no one at the overlook the entire time I was out there.
By the time I got back to my car, I knew I was done. I was nursing a knee myself, and exploring alone is just not my thing. New discoveries need to be shared so impressions can be talked about. 11 AM Mountain time, I started for home. Spent the night at a Rest Area in Texas, north of Wichita Falls. I drove to Florida and spent the night an hour west of Tallahassee. Got home about 1 pm Saturday.
I will talk to the Dr about this knee thing. Feels like fluid behind the knee. Same injury as I had in Scotland last Summer, only this time it was from attempting to scramble up a short wall in Peekaboo. Eventually I will learn to lead with my right leg instead of my left. Today I need to do something about the pile of gear on my office floor.
