My standard breakfast has been freezer bag oatmeal for quite some time now. But it's been instant oatmeal. I wonder if rolled oats will work in a freezer bag with boiling water added. Has anyone done rolled oats before, and, if so, how long does it take?
(I spent some time searching the forum but found nothing. I could test it out at home in the kitchen, but I'm hoping someone here has the answer).
Thanks everyone.

I use Quaker Old Fashioned oats in my FBC, but I think rolled would take longer cook time than just adding boiling water would provide. The Quaker Minute Oats are just too finely cut for my taste. They end up looking like the debris swept up off the factory floor.
I gave up instant oats decades ago, but those were the little packets that it took 2-3 to make a decent breakfast.
ETA: I erred in my thinking you were asking about Steel Cut Oats. IMO, THOSE would take far too long, as they take 20 minutes on the stove top, under constant heat. My Quaker Old Fashioned are rolled oats, so YES, they will work fine. Wait 15 minutes. I have a dedicated cozy, but sometimes will cover that cozy with my quilt, insulating my cooking even more.

I think a lot of FB cooking like rolled oats depends a lot on the insulation you put the bag into after adding the boiling water. The better the insulation, the longer it will be up near boiling. You might have to find the patience to wait 20 minutes for breakfast.
I have never developed a taste for oatmeal even though it seems like everyone thinks it is "the" camping breakfast.

Thanks you guys. I'm glad to hear the Old Fashion work, Zeke. I believe they are healthier than the instant oatmeal.

During the summer I take granola and powdered soy milk. When it comes to breakfast I can eat the same exact meal every morning for months but thats not true of dinner and I struggle with finding enough variety.

My only concern would be for BPing at high altitudes. I am generally at or near 12,000 ft, and water boils at a much lower temperature, so it can be a little harder to rehydrate dry ingredients.

First I don't eat oatmeal so you might not want to listen to me.
But you might want to try a hybrid solution. Cold soak with the least water as possible. Maybe even start the night before (is that food handling safe? I don't cold soak either). Then boil a small amount of water to add in just to bring it up to eating temp and the right consistency. Less water to heat means less fuel used as well.

That hybrid solution sounds great in theory, Ernie. It would complicate things a little, but it could be worth it. I'm going to do some testing at home before taking rolled oats out on the trail.

georgeofthej Since I use a hybrid method at home, I may try something a little different in the field. At home, I put the 2.25 ounces (1 C) of rolled oats, cinnamon, and dehydrated apples in my bowl and add 12 ounces of boiling water. Let sit for 15 minutes and then nuke for 60 seconds (keeping a close eye on them so they don't bubble over the top of the bowl). In the field, I won't have the microwave to finish off the cooking, so maybe I'll add 8 ounces of boiling water and let sit for 15 minutes. then add the remaining 4 ounces and mix up thoroughly. Let sit long enough to cool down for eating.

I use the Quaker Oats' "Quick 1-minute" oats for my FB oatmeal and it works fine. I pre-bag at home with a little powdered milk, cinnamon, raisins and dates (or other freeze-dried fruit) and just add boiling water. Takes about 10 min to hydrate in non-winter temps. The milk (I use the "real" stuff with the fat) helps soften the oats and make it creamier.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I did a couple experiments in the kitchen last week. I'll be out of town for a couple weeks, but I plan to do more experiments when I get back home.

Just an FYI: rolled oats can be eaten without being cooked. I have eaten them after adding oat milk just like you could do with cereal and it worked out just fine. On cold mornings when camping I usually go with quick oats as they can be eaten right after adding boiling water. I do not eat quick oats anywhere other than on the trail, but it is a nice, quick and enjoyable way to start a day on the trail.

I use old-fashioned oats in a freezer bag. I add water and may or may not let them stand for a few minutes. If you like it mushy, let stand. If you like texture you can eat them almost at once, which is what I usually do. I put all the add-ins (a pinch of salt, cinnamon, nuts, raisins, milk powder, maybe some chia) into the bag and “ cook” it all together.

Thanks Rebecca, I'll test that out.
