My sister and I do exchange birthday email cards ribbing each other over our ages. My sister (3 years older) and I exchange birthday cards. One nice looking card I sent her had "You've never looked younger" on the front. The inside had " THAN ME." I am soooo using that next time around.

a joke about recycling it If you really wanted to recycle, you'd send her the Post It back to her so she could use it over and over. Since you now get together frequently, you could hand deliver it to save the postal carbon. That would also save the paper the stamp is printed on. Pretty sure I did hand-deliver it in September

Come to think of it, I can use that on my brothers, being the baby and all that.

I'm working on my list now. Our 450 cards just arrived. I have everything sorted out by location and stage-of-life. Every year, I lose touch with a handful of people, and add others that I meet. I get 25 names on one page of my checklist Here are my categories: 1. Relatives 2. Friends from Wisconsin where I grew up This one is decreasing every year, and is now down to one page 3. Outdoor friends, including people I've met on the trail, these forums, etc. This list is growing, as I now shuttle Colorado Trail hikers, and add about a dozen here every year. 4. Friends from my 6 seasons in Yellowstone This one decreased to one page last year 5. Friends from my 5 years teaching on Guam Another list that is short and decreasing 6. Colorado friends that moved on, or who are no longer in town This is my largest list 7. Foreign friends - about 1 page 8. Friends of my wife, mainly from the Philippines, but a few here in the states, and a few in other countries This one is 4 pages long 9. Friends right here in Gunnison, Colorado

burntfoot, I admire your effort to keep up all those contacts. I have let far too many people drop out of my life.

far too many people drop out of my life. That's the kicker, isn't it? How to decipher which ones we can let go and which ones we need to stay in contact with. Overall, I may have trimmed too far back, but can't really think of any I would add back in.

Overall, I may have trimmed too far back, but can't really think of any I would add back in. It seems to happen more by inertia than intention. But it takes an effort on both sides to keep a friendship going over long distance. We get busy with our lives and stop thinking beyond our immediate circle. The pandemic partly reversed that. If all your social life is going to be over Zoom, might as well connect with friends across the country as across town (aside from the time difference thing, which is a hassle for sure).

Any thoughts as to if this thread should be called Holiday cards instead of Christmas cards?

Any thoughts as to if this thread should be called Holiday cards instead of Christmas cards? For me, definitely. I often don’t get them sent out until St. Patrick’s day.

should be called Holiday cards instead of Christmas cards? Are you trying to get this moved to TPA?

Disclaimer : that is meant to be a joke. In real life I am not as nice as that.

burntfoot , I admire your effort to keep up all those contacts. I have let far too many people drop out of my life. That happens to us as well. One of my best friends moved across the country about 15 years ago. I was horrible about staying in touch and they were busy trying to establish a new life there. 5 years later, we stumbled upon their new address and sent them our family christmas card. They called on christmas eve to say they had received our card and loved it. We chatted over facetime for over an hour. We've done much better since then about staying in touch and even vacationed with them this fall. And now that I'm thinking back on this, I think i'm going to make it a goal to send a christmas card to a friend I've lost touch with every year.

Think the wife still sends a few. Now and again, I get a birthday or other celebratory card from my sister. I hardly ever communicated (or visited) my relatives on Holidays: I early fell into habits that avoided tradition for the most part (or, at least, so I thought), but we are all of us raised in the culture, regardless of inclination pro or con, and often accede to habits which probably have (I know this in my own case, anyway) more to do with personal weakness than anything else.
What I did do was visit the relatives of whomever was currently my significant other, and that only lasted the duration of the primary relationship, of course.
Life is, I think, strange and unthinking in the rearview mirror. Again, speaking for myself only.
