Also known as the Kerrick-Matterhorn loop and trip #4 in "Your Complete Hiking Guide: Yosemite National Park" by Elizabeth Wenk and Jeffrey P. Schaffer.
I reserved a permit with 4 slots. The other people who were originally going to go ended up having to cancel. So now I have three available slots on my permit for that time frame. Entry date is Oct 2 and exit date is Oct 7. Itinerary is as follows:
1st night: Peeler lake
2nd night: Benson lake
3rd night: Smedburg lake
4th night: Lower Matterhorn canyon
5th night: Robinson lakes
I would enjoy having likeminded backpacking companions, but I also enjoy solo hiking, so I'm going either way.
Smedburg was a really nice lake, 15 years ago. Might still be. I haven't been back.
Karl Popper's "Paradox of Tolerance". If we tolerate intolerance, intolerance will flourish. In other words: if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually destroyed by the intolerant. Tolerating bigotry allows bigotry to spread. Exclusion isn't always a dirty word. Tell your local Nazi to F off today.
It’s a great itinerary. Can’t join you for reasons ranging from location and schedule to not backpacking with total strangers, but I love that country.

No worries. I don't really expect anyone to take me up on the offer--for the reasons you listed as well as any number of others--but I thought I'd throw it out there. My wife is kinda worried about me going solo, but I think I can alleviate some of that worry by getting some sort of PLB so she can track me or I can send texts to let her know I'm okay.
Family members do have issues about us going solo . I haven’t yet broken the news to any but the backpacking ones that I am going to start doing some solos again (I lost my husband in an accident 2 years ago, so this is after 26 years of a built-in partner). As you are finding, it is just hard to find people to go along sometimes.

A traditional PLB does not do that (as you probably know)--it is only a means of summoning SAR in an emergency. (And your contacts will also be notified that the device has been activated.)
Some other sorts of devices do add actual communication, either through an "OK" button or actual texts.
If you go with one of those, just be sure to discuss ahead of time how often and what time of day check-ins are expected, and so on. And for heaven's sake, don't forget to check in when you're supposed to, lest you send her into a panic back home.
(I carry the old-school PLB that doeesn't have any additional comms.)

Oh wow, I'm so sorry for your loss! My wife and I will celebrate our 20th anniversary in September, and I cannot begin to imagine what losing her would do to my world. She can't hike/backpack due to health issues, but she always keeps up home and hearth and loves to hear my hiking/cycling stories and see photos of my "adventures". I hope that you are doing well, all things considered.
