Haida Gwaii Trip Report 6-29 to 7-13, 2022
6-29 Drove to Vancouver to meet Dan, and eventually Phil. Dan’s flight changed.
6-30 Dan arrives in the afternoon, Phil arrives about midnight.
7-1 The 3 of us fly to Sandspit, on Haida Gwaii, stay at Northern Shores for the night.
7-2 7:30 pick-up for the 1 hour van ride to Moresby Camp. Catch Zodiac ride to kayaking group at Swan Island. Ride is cold and lasts about 2 hours. Unload, previous group heads back. We are prepped on camping and kayaking, and take a spin around Swan Island in our kayaks.
7-3 Load up and are assigned a partner & kayak. I am given the rear of a 2-person kayak, with a lady named Trudy. Her daughter is one of the 3 guides. I shoe-horn myself in the kayak, with help from the guides, and off we go. We head for the north side of the Bolkus Islands, Elswa Rock, and head for Deluge Point. We go around Ikeda Point & enter Ikeda Cove for a lunch break. It is needed as most of us are sore from sitting. Head out of cove, rounding Awaya Point, entering Collision Bay. Our camp is next to Gona Point.
7-4 We head around Goodwin Point, and are exposed to the open ocean. The next few hours are the roughest water we encounter, taking 1-2 ft waves from the left, at an angle. We skirt the southwest side of the Rankine Islands, and head for Ingram Point. Rounding Benjamin Point puts the wind and tide more behind us, as we paddle for 4 hours without a true stop, covering about 25 miles in 6 hours. Our camp is by either Point Langford or Forsyth Point at the entrance to the east side of Stewart Channel.
7-5 We paddle out of Stewart Channel, hugging the most southern part of Moresby Island. As we round Cape Fanny, we start to see whale spouts. Although they are still far away, we see a humpback completely breech, landing on his side, spectacular. We head to Ninstints for lunch, then paddle across Louscoone Inlet to Gona Point, and camp at Xil. We see numerous whales in the inlet & beyond, some fairly close. Sitting on shore, I get pics of whales & Harlequin Ducks, going up & back Louscoone Inlet.
7-6 Today is possible puffins, & totem viewing. We round Louscoone Point, heading for Adam Rocks. Upon approaching, we do start to see more birds, and yes, Puffins. Some are flying, floating and posing on rocks. We enter a bay on the northern part of SGang Gwaay(Anthony Island), to get to the 200 year old totems and village remains, Nan Sdins NHS of Canada. A short walk gets us to a visitor center, and on to the ruins. Our guides Brian & Steve enlighten us as we make our way through the site. After a lunch break, we make our way out of the bay, heading southeast to the west side of Gordon Island, and on to a bay on Kunghit Island. The 4-5 mile paddle brings us to camp at Ta’dasl.
7-7 We leave late in the day, as we have a short paddle day, and are waiting for the tide to turn. We head along Kunghit Island on the west side, rounding Arnold Point & Washington Rock. We enter Stewart Channel, camping at Ki’lgi, staying the next two nights. Weather is overcast and calling for rain.
7-8 Most of the group do a short paddle to Rose Harbor and back, have lunch, and a few of us walk to old whale bones by the shore. Not to impressive, but a nice walk.
7-9 Rain & drizzle this morning. We break some of the camp waiting for the next group, and our ride back to Moresby Camp. They arrive, we all unload, and off we go, a 3.5 hour cold ride in a Zodiac.
7-10 We fly back to Vancouver from Sandspit, late of course, on Air Canada. Phil, Dan & I stick around for a few days.
7-11 Drive up to Whistler as none of us have been there before. Other than heavy Vancouver traffic, very pretty drive. We take the lift ride to view the area, going up, across and back down on 3 separate lifts. Views are great, we eat lunch and enjoy the scenery. We also spotted a black bear with 2 cubs, riding up the lift. After a few hours walking around Whistler, we drove back to our hotel.
7-12 We go to the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. We enjoy the displayed objects, especially after seeing Haida Gwaii. We next drive to Gastown in Vancouver, eating lunch next to the steam clock. Last stop is Lynn Canyon, for a short walk over 2 bridges, with falls.
7-13 Dan & Phil fly home today, I left late last night, to drive back to CA.
