Planning a possible trip in the Winds to Dry Creek via Horse Ridge. "Possible" as it depends heavily on weather (mid to late September) and my troubled foot (Baxter's neuritis, peroneal tendonitis and plantar fasciitis all in one foot). Can't afford the easy way crossing the Reservation so will need to leave from Glacier Trail TH. Hope to be in Dry Ck late on Day 2 so looking to save some miles. Intend to go over Horse Ridge for the views (and to save miles). Also like to use the Ink Wells Cutoff to cross the Dinwoody (rebuilt last year), but would like to make sure it's a viable foot ford at that time of year and not a swim. Forest Service had no reports as of yesterday. Anyone familiar with that crossing or others nearby? There's a great TR at bcpost from mid July last year, before the trail renovation. Noted the ford was too deep for backpackers. Intended for horses. He wound up crossing nearby, but by swimming. Image from FS.

I have no answer to your question, just a “yikes!”
I swam in fast, deep water with a pack on once, but not on purpose. It is without a doubt the closest I’ve come to dying. That’s not an experience I ever want to relive.
I hope it works out for you—Horse Rdige looks pretty spectacular, and September is probably the perfect time (after the monsoon storms).

Many years ago I rode a horse across it in mid August. It was just one time but I'm skeptical of it for you on foot man, but water levels in the region are REALLY low. I would post in the facebook groups The Wind River Mountains and Wind River Range. You might also see if Wind River Gear in Dubois could point you to someone that's done it before.

absarokanaut Good to know. Called WRG and they had never even heard of the crossing. All depends on who answers. FS wouldn't confirm crossing for hikers. Posted in the Wind River Mountains. No response yet; rules discourage any guidance or naming of locations. Don't want another Delta Lake. Mostly posts by people just visiting Titcomb or the Cirque. Didn't know about the other site. Will see if they let join. cweston Yeah, won't attempt if I have to swim, planned or unplanned! Short discussion at bcpost about possible alternatives from GoogleEarth and Caltopo. Sometimes it's faster to take the easier, longer route than finding a way around a major obstacle.
