I'm just wondering if there is anyone here who knows when the black flies normally come out in the UP. I usually hold off until mid august before I go up for this reason alone but am wondering when one needs to be up there to beat them before they hatch?

Good question, and I don't have an answer except that I know it has to be before Memorial Weekend.

I normally go to the Porkies the first weekend in October (late Sept at the earliest) but I went once in early May. The black flies weren't a problem yet, but head nets were needed for the gnats (I assumed the little flying buggers were gnats) that could be real pests.
Mrs. driftwoody and I went to Pictured Rocks the first time in early August 1995 for our honeymoon, and we soon discovered that long pants & sleeves were necessary despite the near record heat.

We backpack Picture Rocks every year (except this year. Permit was refunded) the weekend before Memorial Day and drive through the black fly hatch almost every year. So before Memorial Day is good. After that it's pretty rough until September unless you are able to camp on the lake shore. The breeze from the lake help keep them at bay.

In the Adirondacks, which I assume is close to the same climate zone as the UP, the peak blackfly season is roughly Memorial Day to 4th of July. Mosquitoes come in mid-June, and the deerflies move in after the blackflies retreat.
