Gunnison, one of the coldest spots in the country had its first frost last night. Here are stats from the previous winter of 22/23:
First frost 2022 = September 11, 2022 First day of every-day steady frost = October 3, 2022 First day that it didn't freeze = April 19, 2023 Last frost of 2023 = May 14, 2023
Days below freezing last winter = 195 Days below 20 degrees = 131 Days below 10 degrees = 83 Days below 0 = 53 Days below minus 10 degrees = 20 Days below minus 20 degrees = 6 Days below minus 30 degrees = 0 (That's right, we didn't get as cold as usual)
Snowfall trace = 43 days Snowfall significant amount = 19 days

Line of severe thunderstorms came thru yesterday evening. My son and I saw at least 10 "proto-funnels" swirling in the clouds above before the rain came. A waterspout briefly touched down nearby. What we saw was similar to the beginning of this video... just several loosely-formed vortexes (which appeared to be stealing energy from each other) instead of a larger single vortex.

I'm curious if anyone else obsesses over the weather just before a hike. I admit I mostly do it because I really really don't like hiking in the rain but I'm not sure if its ever changed my plans. I have two hikes starting this weekend that I will finish by the 7th or 8th depending on how things are going. And as I've been watching the forecast, a couple of weeks ago it appeared that I was going to be fairly wet but now it looks like I'll be mostly h2o free. Looking forward to this as the colors should be at peak.

Yes. I generally pay pretty close attention. Because I live in Kansas and do all of my serious hiking/BPing in other states, I don't usually have the ability to be super-flexible. But I do try to build enough wiggle room in to, say, start a BP a day later than planned if that means hitting a better weather window. Summer high-country hiking will always involve monsoon storms, alas, but big low pressure systems that park in the area for days at a time are a bit more of an issue.

I don't usually have the ability to be super-flexible. This sounds like me which is why I don't think a weather forecast has ever changed my plans. Now 2 years when I went to CO for an 11 day hike I wish I had delayed the start for a week. I've never spent so much time in my tent because of rain.

The Tetons could see a foot and a half of snow today and overnight. Absaroka and Gros Ventre Ranges could see significant accumulation as well. Looks like the southern Bighorns could get the brunt of it. Keep your stick on the ice Travis and Rangewalker.

Autumn arrived in NJ with a bang. Last Saturday, temps dropped by 20 degrees over a couple hours at lunchtime and have remained 20-25 degrees below where they had been ever since.

Keep your stick on the ice Travis and Rangewalker. Half a foot of snow possible at higher elevations in my vicinity. I generally expect some snow by Halloween around here. This is a little early but only at higher elevations, so about right.
ETA: Now a full foot of snow predicted.

We have had extreme dry weather here in KS. The lake we live on (a flood-control reservoir) is about 5 feet below the nominal "pool level." That doesn't sound like much, but, for example, none of the boat ramps on the lake are usable when the level is that low. Last night, I walked with my dog out onto a small peninsula of gravel I've never seen exposed before.
I would say we've received about an inch of rain total since the beginning of August.
It's not unusual to get 3-4 inches in a few hours in a typical summer thunderstorm here.

Winter has arrived in SEattle. Cold rain, and plenty of it. My rain gauge is at 2.5” since the rain started, mostly overnight. That should put an end to any remaining fires in the mountains. Snow level appears to be down to about 2500’ or less. But here in town, at least, we’re suppose to get some sun this afternoon. We shall see.

Same storm is now bearing down on north Tahoe areas where highest elevations may see 6 inches or so with lesser amount down to Lake Tahoe at 6.2k feet. Due to still warm ground temps, most snow will quickly melt though will further cool the ground so by early November storms may start accumulating. Indeed, should put an end to any more serious wildfires.
Again for this 23/24 winter, have an EPIC Tahoe Local Season Pass ($425) for 3 resorts. www.davidsenesac.com/2023_Trip_Chronicles/2023_Trip-Chronicles-0.html

We're having a few days of near-record temps in the Midatlantic. I saw two snakes today, which is very unusual for this time of year.
