Insider People who bike to work may live longer, according to new research Shira Feder 19 hours agoOf the 3.5 million people surveyed, only 3% of them cycled to work, while 5% walked.
But that minority fared the best: the cyclists saw a 13% reduction in early death rates compared to the people who drove to work. People who walked or took public transportation to work saw no change in their expected lifespan. link

Get up and move every day. Quit drinking except for one. Get some sleep. Learn to eat right. Stop worrying. Spend time with friends and help someone.
I am still backpacking at 71. My Dad is 97.

I would have loved biking to work if it weren't so dangerous and far. I'm trying to decide if I'll resume biking after I retire and move somewhere more conducive to it.

That's all good advice. I'm a few years from 70. The things I pay attention to are Diet, Attitude and Exercise. Diet - Avoid chemical in your food. Avoid refined sugars and saturated fats. All things in moderation. Attitude - Emit positivity. Fret not. Exercise - I primarily bicycle. I'm averaging 1200 miles a year and have been doing it for 30 years. Avoid high-impact activities like jogging and skiing. Backpacking and bicycling seem to work best for me.

It also helps to be born white, with access to good medical care. I'm turning 70 in less than 2 months, still get out there some but not as much as I'd like. Most of that has to do with my location.

I’ll have to see if I can find the article and post it. Regards, DR

After about a 15 year hiatus, I started biking to work again. I'm more alert, don't nap in the afternoon as I used to, I'm getting much more done at work and home, and my wife says I look sexier. All of that from an 11 mile round trip on my bike. Plus, I save $4 bus fare every day and the trip by bike is a bit faster than the bus. I'm 72. My father rode 20 miles a day every day on a single speed girl's bike because of a bad hip (couldn't boost his leg over the crossbar on his good bike, so he adopted my mom's), and lived to 96.
What got me back on the bike was covid boredom from being stuck at home. Because there was so little traffic on the streets, I started going out exploring Chicago in a different direction every day for a 10-15 mile ride, and when I went back to work I just kept riding. My longer term goal is another bike tour after the hospitals get back to normal so that I might stand a chance of getting a bed if I had an emergency in some rural area.

People who bike to work are also more likely to be concerned about their own general health & fitness. It probably isn't just the bike.

I walked to work (ca. 1.5 mile each way) for many, many years. Since moving to the country 5 years ago, it continues to be a struggle replacing that daily commute/exercise.
When I do walk, it's in the woods and on the lakeshore, which is lovely. But it's always harder to find time for somethihg that needs to be scheduled, vs something (the commute) that just happens every workday.
Decades ago in Seattle I attempted bike commuting, but it was a huge fail. Work was on top of a hill, and more often than not raingear was involved, so I just arrived a complete sweatball.

It also helps to be born white, with access to good medical care. Probably statistically true for Americans. There are, however, the Blue Zones in various parts of the world, where non-white people without our idea of "good medical care" are the longest living on earth. Diet and lifestyle are credited. So, maybe all Americans, regardless of race, can adopt the Blue Zone habits and enjoy longer, healthier lives.

Muleman, when you say "eat right," are you talking about more fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes? In other words, do you think leaning toward a more whole-food plant-based diet has helped your dad?

Muleman, when you say "eat right," are you talking about more fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes? In other words, do you think leaning toward a more whole-food plant-based diet has helped your dad? Whole food plant based is a key from everything I have found to be science based. It is what I have moved towards to stay healthy into my older years. When I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic, I went low carb to lose weight and regain a good insulin response. Now that I have those things under control as well as a good lipid panel, I am moving towards a whole food plant based diet with additions, kinda a Mediterranean diet. Rumi
