Very clever performance in that video Desertdweller
I used to swim so far out that the lifeguards would scream at me with their bullhorns but I ignored them and swam for hours and floated on my back just gazing up into the sky. There is a certain beauty out in he Stream in he Atlantic. Sis-in-law lives in northern Florida so we visit her occasionally and we have rented a beach house in he panhandle and caught Spanish Mackerel with a propping rod standing in waist deep bathtub water of the Gulf.

desert dweller , I have a feeling your brother built or at least paneled his living room. It's too simple, clean, functional and attractive to have been built by a professional builder...or is your brother a pro builder? I agree with swiftdream . There's a nice juxtaposition between the clean lines of the knotty pine and the complexity of the bike. And yours is just the opposite - complexity of the rug patterns vs. a streamlined bike.

It's too simple, clean, functional and attractive to have been built by a professional builder...or is your brother a pro builder? Yes. Blake never finished high school. He learned the construction trade from his father-in-law. Then he started his company and became a general contractor. He built his entire house himself using only wood from the 40 acres he owns in southern Ohio near Logan. He made a lot of money in his life. About 10 years ago he sold his contractor business and went to work for the Girl Scouts maintaining their acreage, buildings, roads and bridges throughout all of Ohio. He retired this year and put his house and land up for sale.

desert dweller, I love to read about self-made people, especially ones who prove that traditional work routes and lives aren't the only way to e successful and well lived life, in the sense of self satisfaction as opposed to a societal measure.

And yours is just the opposite Yeah, we're pretty much 180 on how we view and live our life. I told him once that if we didn't know each other and lived in the same small town, we probably would have never met simply because of how different our lives are. I think he either misunderstood what I meant or took it the wrong way. We don't talk as much as we use to. But, he says he's making the trip out to Tucson to visit. It'll be his first time in the 40 years I've been here. I need to get my house ready. I've always been proud of what he's done and how he took care of mom in her last days. He is a man of great principle. We don't share many of them, though.

desert dweller , I think clarity often comes with time, physical and emotional distance, experience and age (especially old age!), and sometimes just sitting around thinking. I appreciate others' sharing insights on my life, family, etc., as they offer ideas and concepts I'm too close to see. Different lives compliment; there can be so much shared and gained from the perspective of another, especially a family member. But it's also interesting how lives divert over the years, sometimes for the better, and sometimes not. And sometimes the reunion can be joyous, and overwhelmingly emotional. I've seen that over the last few years, especially as family leave this earth, one by one. You express a pride and respect for him; to me, that's one of the most important qualities siblings can share. I need to get my house ready. I thought only we women thought that way!

I'm fortunate that is not the case with me and my siblings. They got the good looks and smarts; I got the rest. The money? Good point. Since I’m a fed I don’t make much money either.

My brothers and I all lead very different lives, but when you look closer, we are actually a lot alike. We all look very similar. We have very similar tastes in so many areas. We rarely see each other, yet I'd say we're very close. I consider myself lucky to have two great brothers who also happen to have great wives.

Despite my earlier comments, this is actually a pretty accurate description of my two brothers and me. I am particularly grateful that they chose wives I can get along with and enjoy (and one of them chose in-laws who were a major factor in me surviving graduate school, so there’s that, too!).
