Yeah, seems kind of dumb to exclude certain sizes of the same design. Presumably they have to test each version individually, but that seems like it’s a bit ridiculous.

All Bearikades have the same top and same bottom, and all the carbon fiber side walls are the same just cut to different lengths off the same long carbon fiber tube.

On the approved list from Yosemite National Park it says model 1766 and higher. That would include the Blazer, IMHO.

Well I posted the question to Yosemite in their FB page. We’ll see.
I agree it’s illogical. But I bet it’s a regulation each “model” gets tested individually and they’re not accepting a size variation as the same “model”. Though I’d agree it is when the construction is identical, just a slightly different length of tube (and shorter, which I’d say is stronger)

I edited the thread title to get rid of the “for sale” aspect, since the can is sold. But the discussion of approved bear cans is useful, so carry on!

The pattern seems to be park’s that follow IGBC and those that don’t. Then there’s the fun ones that give it a twist, such as Arches(?, maybe CanyonLands) that states the IGBC list BUT hard sided containers only: so, no Bearicades still.

ETA: So a week and no response. Unfortunate but what it is. A lot of questions in Yosemite’s FB page go unanswered except by other users.

Their response: “We don't have any updates regarding new container approvals at this time. Only those included on the website are currently allowed.” My response back. “Yosemite National Park Ah, unfortunate. Of course. ETA: So the Bearicades that are 10 1/2” and 14 1/2” tall are approved while the Bearicades that are 8” and 12” tall are not. Puzzling. www.wild-ideas.net “ Shrug.

Yeah, they only list Weekender and Expedition, not Scout, Blazer, or (presumably) any of the custom sizes. That seems like an argument I'd be willing to press if necessary, and I'm super cautious about such things. Seems like they approve each specific model, not the design which is identical except for the length of the carbon tube. That would mean if you custom order one, at say 22", it could never be approved. disclaimer: I have an Expedition (2010)

It’s a glitch perhaps in Wild Ideas marketing? Were they to simply sell “The Bearicade” in 8”, 10 1/2”, 12”, and 14 1/2” sizes etc. would it simply be seen as one model with a variety of sizes?
When I buy a shirt it’s just the same “model” shirt which ever size I select. Otoh: they’re all the same price....
Well forwarned.... Better to know and not get stuck with a Garcia for those size trips at the last minute. Or if looking to get a smaller one simply bump up to the Weekender for that relatively minor 3 oz, $30 (less minor lol) hit.

I bought the BearVault 500 about 12 years ago, then I heard it wasn't approved in all areas. However, I see it is among the approved containers in the web site linked above. Is my BV500 now approved wherever I go?

I have never carried a bear canister until last weekend. Even when I went to Glacier ages ago it was food hangs. So when I found out that the eastern Adirondacks now require canisters combined will some people here talking about a canister is safer and easier than a hang I thought I would try one. For a number of reasons including cost I went with a Garcia Cache. I really wanted to go with a Bear Vault but I read this: www.nytimes.com/2009/07/25/nyregion/25bear.htmlUnfortunately, Yellow-yellow was killed and Bear Vaults are still being reported as being breached in the High Peaks. The NY law is pretty general: 6 NYCRR Paragraph 190.13(b)(2) defines a bear-resistant canister as "a commercially made container constructed of solid, non-pliable material manufactured for the specific purpose of resisting entry by bears." So there isn't an approved list like for the national parks. The BV qualify but they may be breached.

Is my BV500 now approved wherever I go? There’s no guarantee of everywhere as each national park, forest and other agency makes their own approvals. That said anything that appears on the IGBC listing is a decent bet. igbconline.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/190524_Certified_Products_List.pdfETA: Yes DEC warns about breaching the BV in the eastern sections (High Peaks): at The Loj store they’ve some on display with holes gnawed through them: talking to the staff they’re impression is it’s not related to age weakened materials. www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7225.html
