Looking for some help with a trip to the Boundary Waters this spring. Looking at 3 nights. Would like to spend most of the time focused on fishing vs covering miles. More than likely will go through an Outfitter to rent canoes. Would like to do a portage or two. Thanks in advance.

I have use Voyageur North Outfitters in Ely on three occasions. Great people and great service. Give them a call and tell them what kind of trip you are looking for and they will help you pick a route. We used their "Ultralight Canoe and Food Partial Package" which included canoes, food, cooking stuff, showers, and routing service. We brought our own tents, sleeping bags and portage packs. I recommend spending the extra few bucks to upgrade to lightweight Kevlar canoes, your backs will thank you on the portage. Since you are focused on fishing, you may want to do the same route we did a couple times which was getting ferried across Burntside Lake, then portage over to Crab lake, from there options to Korb, Cummings, and others. The fishing was great for smallmouth, largemouth, and pike. www.vnorth.com/Edit: I just noticed you said "this spring". Not sure what timeframe you are planning, but ice out on the lakes will determine the earliest you can get on them. It can be anywhere from early April to mid May. The outfitter can provide better info on this than I can.

Union are you looking to go backpacking or on a canoe trip? Canoe. We have tabled this trip. We were planning to go late May, given the winter we have had.... well, we will take a look at it again next year.

You can take a look at the itinerary I did a few years back - we were out for six days - amazing trip. www.campfiresandconcierges.com/boundary-waters-canoe/

Sawbill Lake and portage into Alton, might meet your needs. Great outfitter right at the entry point, that can help with everything from just a canoe to full-service everything included with fishing guide. I think Alton is a good fishing lake, and it is an easy portage.
