I just rescued this cutie-pie from our office building entrance. She was longer than my finger. It's been a few years since I last saw one. If someone told me there is life from another planet on this earth, my first suspect would be a praying mantis.

I once ordered praying mantis eggs cases as a ‘natural’ form of pest control for my garden. The first spring was insane, hundreds of them. They naturally dispersed as the weeks rolled by, but I have no doubt I bolstered the population in my neighborhood for several years.
Very cool critters. VERY useful for general backyard pest control. Fun to watch too. Oh, but if anyone thinks a praying mantis cannot catch and kill a hummingbird, you are wrong. Collateral damage

I almost did that for my garden this summer but never got around to doing it. Did it help at all? Even if it didn't I might anyway I like seeing these creatures around.

Cornell U says that they are slightly effective, but they kill good and bad bugs indiscriminately. Also, if you do buy them, make sure you buy native species. Most sold are Chinese or European.

Cornell U says that they are slightly effective Actually, I thought they were very effective. I still had a aphid problem, but solved that the following year with Lady Bug eggs. Good point about the non-native species. I ordered from a local gardening shop. The proprietor was the one that convinced me to buy from him, as he had those same concerns.

This is good info. I'm definitely going to do this for my garden next year.

Around here, Asian Lady Bugs are a major pain. They eat aphids, but infest people's houses during the winter. One of those nasty tasting beetles in your beer will ruin the taste.
