When staying at Mt. Sterling campsite in the Smokies, where is the water source located at? Is it on Baxter Creek or Mt. Sterling Trail? We were told it is quite a distance from the campsite.

there's definitely a spring on the Baxter Creek Trail side of the mountain. the brown book says it's 0.25 from the tower.

beware of mice at that site, they're persistent.

yeah...
like ashe says----theres a spring just down baxter from the tower...
bring some kinda collecting device as you only really wanna do that trip once...
there should be a sign there...
or if you are coming from the other side---mount sterling ridge side----theres a small spring just down mount sterling trail....
if its flowing that is (and should be unless late in summer)...
same thing-----use a collecting device and then go up to campsite...

I've stayed at Mt. Sterling once and the info you received about the springs and mice is accurate. Beautiful views from the fire tower, too.

Pretty Hollow Gap is really nice (no water though) if you're coming from that direction.
