I was wondering if anyone has recently hiked Roan Mountain (within the last month or so)? I'll be heading up there in just over a week. My question is about water. I'm not expecting it to be too bad since we have had a good bit of rain recently. I'll be doing 28 miles from Carver's Gap to Indian Grave Gap. I did 21 mile in Ga. last weekend and the first 11 miles had only one water source (mile 3) and the second half had water everywhere. So, if anyone has any recent knowledge of the Roan Mountain area please let me know.

i hiked the carvers gap to 19E route a few years ago...
there's water at that first shelter along the way----stan murray.....
then water near the overmountain shelter (the barn)----water is halfway or so between AT and the barn on the side trail that takes one to the shelter...
then after little hump, coming down from that, theres a small little campsite that has water as well...
then at the old apple orchard site (which is now a campsite)----theres a side trail to a water source...
then nearing 19E, theres a stream right down there to get water from...
after 19 E, i have no idea about water.......

Thanks kevinumberger, looks like we're going to push the hike out a month or more. Calling for thunderstorms up there this weekend and we're close enough that I'd rather reschedule than hike all day in the rain not to mention the lightning hazard.

keep in mind----it is thru hiker season so there will be tons of people..
that route is popular even without the thrus...
the weekend i went years ago, near end of summer----there were 34 people staying at the overmountain shelter...
i opted not to stay there....

I know, part of the reason we wanted to go this month. It's still a bit early so the bubble won't be hitting Roan Mountain for a couple more weeks. We ran into a few thru hikers when we did a section from Neel Gap to Unicoi a couple weekends ago but it wasn't too bad.

Roan Mountain, of course, is world famous for its rhododendron bloom in June. But in my opinion Mount Rogers in Virginia is the place to be for that explosion of color.
