Returning home tonight, as I neared the top of my steep driveway, I startled something that rose from the ground on big white wings and settled in one of the overhanging trees. It stared directly at me as I sat behind the wheel, still slightly downhill, before it decided the area was too busy and moved along. I've read about snowy owls visiting NJ, but I've never had such a good look at one. www.nj.com/ocean/index.ssf/2017/11/snowy_owl_explosion_expected_in_new_jersey_this_ye.html

However, it appears that there are Snowy Owls everywhere this year. Yes, I hope everyone gets a chance to see one. They are beautiful creatures.

Several have been spotted in the bottom of the Adirondacks in recent weeks. I went to an Audobon Society owl event on an experimental forest/farm in Vt. last weekend. I've seen two in my life, one in the Catskills, One in the Adirondacks, I really hope for more.

That's really cool, BigLoad. I've always wanted to see that bird, and in 40 years of birding never have. There's been one up in Odessa, Texas that I've been tempted to go see, but I just haven't had the time.

That's very cool! I got to see 2 in northern Maryland, but not up close.

They've been seen as far South in Indiana as the Ohio River. The local birdwatchers have more assets than the CIA to network the locations of sitings. I had to go all the way to Hudson Bay to see one.

I grew up in New Jersey..nice to hear about Snowy Owls there!
I've lived in Alaska for 27+ years and have yet to see a Snowy Owl.... interior Alaska has hawk owls, boreal owls, great horned owls, great gray owls...boreal species. Snow Owls are typically in the tundra to the north, but I have never seen them...guess I need to visit N. J.
