Wife and I are looking for places to day hike (6-8 miles) in CO for four or five hikes. Been to RMNP and Summit County area. Thinking of the Silverton area or some area with serious mountain scenery in Colorado. We need car accessible (not 4 wheel) trailheads. We go slow (my age 69, I would say I am in shape and know to acclimate), but we are into it so to speak. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you all.

I have some non-traditional day hikes in the area other than the popular Ice Lake, Stoney Pass, Mary Lakes hikes. Send me a private message if you at interested. Need to grab a PBR and watch the Super Bowl. Lots of super cool options if you are based in town. Recommend early reservations for Triangle Motel ($) of the Grand Hotel ($$$-$$).

Ouray, on the other end of the Million Dollar Highway ( Ouray to Silverton) has a wonderful set of natural hot springs and a very nice swimming facility at great prices. The area is beautiful as well with lots of hiking in the area. Definitely take your swimming suits and check it out. I like Ouray much better than Silverton. But, the whole area is beautiful. Check out Telluride, just over the moutain, if you get a chance to see how the 1% live.

If you're open to a week-long commercial backpacking trip in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness that meets many of your criteria, let me know and I'll send you a link. We are currently a group of 7.

Ice Lakes Basin is one of my favorite places in the USA.

Looking for a 5 day backpacking trip in this area. Would like to have time to acclimate. We’re an experienced group of backpackers. Would like to have a loop but can work out a shuttle. Thanks in advance . Alan

Alan,
A great hike is to take the train (Durango Silverton Narrow Guage) from Durango and get off at Elk Creek. Hike up that drainage and over Hunchback Pass and follow Valecito Creek to Johnson Creek. Then up to Columbine Pass and drop down into the Chicago Basin and back to train to Durango. Columbine Pass looking down into Chicago Basin is stunning. You can stay a few days in Chicago Basin exploring or climbing the surrounding 14ers. Windom is a walk up and not technical. Trip can be easily done in four days or stretched into more. One of the better loop hikes in US.

We were up in the Silverton area a couple of years ago in third week of September and colors were at their peak. But in Telluride they were not even starting and as the crow flies they are 20 miles or so apart. Colors are hit or miss but it might be that first week of October might be late, but maybe not. Hopefully the area will get some rain because it has been super dry this year and that I am sure will affect the colors.

First week of October could be glorious, or you could get 2' of snow. It's hard to plan ahead at that time of year.

Serious fire raging between Durango and Silverton at the moment. It'll eventually be put out, but the damage could be widespread and impact hiking in the area: inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5822/--Kurt
