Has anyone ever done or have any recommendations on doing a kayak or canoe trip on the Buffalo where one could put in, float a ways(half a day or so) to or near a trail head that would offer a nice out and back or loop; setting up camp for the night near the river, setting off again down the river in the morning and doing the same thing the next day? Maybe a 2-3 day excursion? Thanks for any input and advice!

The upper section allows that, I've done it a couple times. Floated down and hiked in to Hemmed in Hollow. There are lots of opportunities in that area for such a endeavor. I just received the NatGeo / Trails Illustrated Buffalo River West map, and have been reviewing that for an upcoming trip there. From that, there appears to be many options for you, though much of the trail parallels the river. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. It won't be the end of the world if the hiking isn't great as I'll make do with a good float. That Hemmed in Hollow looks pretty neat too. Thanks for the heads up!

I'll second the recommendation. There are really good trails between Steel Creek and Kyles Landing. The water drops early in the summer though, making it hard to float after spring. There is better flow for early summer down stream. I've floated to Grinders Ferry and it's really beautiful on the river. Didn't do any hiking there, but there are places you could.

Contact Lisa Logan at Ouachita Kayak Tours. She can not only give you good recommendations, she can outfit you if you don't want to schlep your boats around.
