I gained 3 lbs and I feel like a whale. I saw a sign that read, "Now that the winter fat is gone time for spring rolls."

M: 5-mile road run in snowy conditions Tu: Yoga W: Weights - Back/bis Th: Rest day Fr: Had to work thru lunch then into the evening. Sa: Downhill skiing followed by a 4.5-mile snowy trail run Su: 4.5-mile hilly trail run. I brought my dog but forgot her leash. I contemplated going back for it but decided to try her first "leashless" run. She did pretty good!
My weight is all over the place. After gaining 3 lbs, I lost 5 lbs, then gained another 3 back.

My progressive work out schedule to ramp up for the summer has had a marked effect on my physical fitness.
My schedule has went like this:
Week 1: 3 days straight treadmill, 1 hour, 800+ calories per workout - I did one day of weights Week 2: a light week of working out weight and aerobics Week 3: 4 Days straight treadmill 1 hour, 800+ calories per workout, I did one day of weights Week 4: a light week of working out weight and aerobics Week 5: 5 days straight treadmill 1 hour, 800+ calories per workout. Week 6: a light week of working out weight and aerobics Week 7: 6 days straight treadmill 1 hour, 800+ calories per workout. Week 8: a light week of working out weight and aerobics
I am in week 9. I have done 4 days straight of an expected 7 days straight of 1 hour treadmill, 800+ calories per workout. I started noticing in week 5 the positive results. In weeks 1 and 3, I'd already be sore and stiff just to steep off the treadmill. I'd want a nap in the day and I'd sleep hard. I'd wake up sore and stiff and it took part of the light workout week to recover.
In week 8 I got a chance to hit a trail. I did that trail quite fast and, even though I was sore, I recovered quickly.
Today, I got off the treadmill and I was ready to go workout. I am feeling ready for the start of the backpacking season.
My next thing do will be to bring my backpack to the gym loaded for a 5 day trip. I'll walk on the treadmill and begin to establish base lines for a progressive backpack workout.

Yesterday I rolled BOTH ankles while trail running. Thankfully, years upon years of trail running have toughened my ankles and I was able to continue after each time. Today the outside of my lower right leg is the slightest bit sore... the only remaining proof of my clumsiness.

Week of 15 Apr: Sun: none Tue: Landmine Wed: treadmill, 1 hour, 22 pound backpack, 408.2 calories - Actually putting a pack on, with packed for 4 days 3 nights, was tiring, in spite of the training I have done this winter. Last year I did not do a pre-backpacking training with pack and I regretted it.
- As I walked along on the treadmill and grew tired, I thought to why am I doing this? My answer is Shi-Shi. I want Shi-Shi. More importantly I want Rialto to Shi-Shi to Rialto. I did not touch one setting to make it easier on me. I want to see, with my own eyes, Point of the Arches.

walkswithblackflies - Ouch! I never get off that easy. Seems like I always bugger myself up when I roll an ankle. I have a bit of catching up; But, I'll just post last week's activity to spare you. M: Yoga Tu: 5 mile run W: rest Th: 2 mile taper run F: rest / foam rolled Sa: Beat the Heat 10k. I missed my PR by 3 minutes. I haven't been real consistent with my training plan. I am happy to say my recovery went pretty well (with the exception of running a low fever and feeling nauseous Sat night while trying to fall asleep). Su: Walked the dogs 2 miles

M: 5-mile road run Tu: Run from car mechanic to work, then back in the afternoon... 4 miles total W: Weights - Back/bis Th: 7 miles trail run. Rolled both ankles but kept going (see post above). Fr: Rest Sa: 7-mile trail run. Instead of working out in the evening, my workout partner and I drank beer. Su: Rest. I feel pretty beat up. And the weather was horrible.
There was a definite increase in my miles. Finally being able to get on trails is motivating me. One thing I love doing is checking out new places. I had to work out of town on Thursday, so I took advantage of the situation and ran some wooded hilly trails at the local university. Poorly marked intersections made the run more "interesting".
My brother drove into town on Saturday specifically to trail run at a place he'd never been. So although my leg/ankle wasn't 100% on Saturday, I bucked-up and ran. My leg/ankle was barely noticeable while running. Strangely, I felt it the couple of times that we walked to check out views, etc.
My weight is still all over the place... but trending down!

Seems like I always bugger myself up when I roll an ankle. Yesterday I was running the same trails that I rolled my ankles on, and near the end, I re-aggravated my right leg injury. Uncharacteristically, I cut my run short so as not to further aggravate the injury (normally I push on until I really screw something up). For some reason, I kept envisioning my lower leg bones shattering (LOL!). It was a good move. I had to drive 2.5 hours home, and an hour into the drive the area was sore and stiff. But after another hour it was almost back to normal (though still a bit sore to the touch). I think I'll skip any more trail running until this weekend.

walkswithblackflies - OMG. That story of the bones shattering completely haunts me! I was thinking about it before my 10k this past weekend! Glad things are feeling better today. Hopefully this weekend goes better and your body cooperates.

My update from last week isn't much to talk about:
M: 1.5 hours Yoga Tu:"rest" due to 40-60 mph winds W: "rest" due to late night at work Th: "rest" due to late night at work F: "rest" due to rain/snow/yuckiness Sa: Swim 400 yeards (I need to double this without any rests every 25 years* before the end of July....) Su: Run 5 miles; Walked the dogs a hilly 1.75 miles
Some notes about swimming. I can't seem to bring myself to do bilateral breathing (breathing on both sides instead of just my left side). It feels extremely unnatural for some reason. I need to force myself to practice this. I can tell this is effecting my right shoulder. I've got to spend some quality time in the pool. Wish I could afford a coach; he/she would be their weight in gold right now. I keep hoping someone would come up to me and offer assistance, but that's just not going to happen in the fitness mecca of Boulder. Nothing is cheap or free.
*edit: that should have been *yards*.

Yep... you just have to force yourself to do it. It feels awkward at first, but soon becomes second nature.

M: 5.5 mile trail run. Somehow I timed it right between downpours. Rolled my ankle (again) just before ending (see post above). Tu: Yoga. Rest ankle. W: Rest ankle. I was going to lift weights at home, but was too lazy. Weather really has me "down". Th: I was going to walk, but the weather was absolutely nasty. F: Walk dog 1.5 miles. Sa: Hallelujah... first spring-like day of the year!!! Yard work all day, then a 6-mile trail run. Ankle felt fine. Burned 3,700 calories. Su: Yard work all day. Short bike ride with kids. Burned 3,400 calories.
