I do eat brown rice and have been known to be spaced out without the intervention of any substances. Maybe the Earth Mother? Perhaps it's Mama Kin and you are channeling your spiritual and creative forces...

Hammock hikers seem to be looked at like it's a religion and they are the missionaries - probably because some of them can be like that....
It's just gear. The ultralighters can be the same way about their "ultralightness" and likely for the same reason. If you're doing the hammock or the ultralight pack for reasons having to do with physical pain infringing on their desire to be backpacking, and it relieves a ton of that pain and makes it possible for you, it probably would feel like a great miracle - I know that being in the hammock allows me to catch up on my sleep big time, as I never sleep for more than a few hours straight without it. Never underestimate the power of relief from pain. And people love to share their miracles with other people....
Then again, there are arrogant twits everywhere, as well.... That would lead us to the narcissistic backpacker. Often accompanied by compliant duckling newbies....
