Has anybody hiked Isle Royale in the late-May or early-June time periods? I'm wondering what sort of weather is typical around that time.

Has anybody hiked Isle Royale in the late-May or early-June time periods? I'm wondering what sort of weather is typical around that time. If you want to go early, try to take one of the first ferries over in May. You'll have the Isle almost to yourself once you are out of Rock Harbor. Leaves won't be out until early June, but by then so are most of the bugs. But no leaves does give you a different view. On my one early May trip I don't remember any bugs, weather was great, I enjoyed it very much. However, if you have options, September is the best time to go. However, the Lake does slow down the fall colors on the Isle so don't expect much color but the thimbleberries are still out and worth the trip over just to eat them. I have been on IR 4x. This is one park where you will meet a number of returning backpackers. There is no place quite like Isle Royale. I have done 2 solo trips, one with my sons- their first backpack trip, and one trip with Coolkat who I think is hooked on IR. He'll never forget it. We had a great trip together.

So June is bug time? Do they come out early or late June?

The weather/temps will determine when the bugs come out.
I finished a May hike of the Pictured Rocks and only had a few black flies the last day. I talked to a guy who started the day I ended and he about died the black flies were so bad a few days behind me. Warm temps will bring them out.
Sea to Summit makes a good, roomy head bug net. Be sure to pack one no mater what time you go, just in case.

Thanks for the heads up. In my mind I had pictured the flies being an issue inmid-June and not earlier.
