What? There's not a thread started about trees? Here is a boojum tree from the Boyce Thompson Arboretum of southern Arizona

Is that an actual type of tree or is it some kind of bush or shrub?

Is that an actual type of tree or is it some kind of bush or shrub? They call it a tree in the Ocotillo family. Fouquieria columnaris, the Boojum tree or cirio (American Spanish: [ˈsiɾjo]) is a tree in the ocotillo family, whose other members include the ocotillos. It is nearly endemic to the Baja California Peninsula (both the northern and southern states), with only a small population in the Sierra Bacha of Sonora, Mexico.Wiki

Trees have always been a primary subject in my body of work. During 2017 captured some wonderful trees. January 21, 2017 at Dodge Ridge Ski Area after a 66 inch dump of the lightest driest powder snow. Took an out in the woods break in the afternoon and captured the above with my moto g smartphone. ---------------------------- Parish's poppy Anza Borrego State Park 3/12 >15 Yaqui Meadows wash, ocotillo, fouquieria splendens, Parish's poppy, eschscholzia parishii, Bigelow monkeyflower, mimulus bigelovii, 12200x8600 pixels 6 frames 3 column 2 row 29 image focus stack stitch blend A6000 60mm enlarged vertical slice view: www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/QK02281-02326-3x2vq.jpgMore on this page: www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/winter_2017-3.html#mar14---------------------------- May 17, 2017 dense Pacific dogwood forest in bloom, Yosemite National Park, 6600x4900 pixels 2 frame 2 column 1 row 12 image focus stack stitch blend A6000 60mm enlarged vertical slice view: www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/QT08198-08209-2x1bve.jpgMore on this page: www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/spring_2017-10.html#QT08198-08209-2x1bv-text---------------------------- June 15, 2017 against the rising pink hues of dusk earth night wedge, a stately jeffrey pine, pinus jeffreyi, Yosemite National Park, 3900x4900 pixels 1 frame 5 image focus stack blend A6000 30mm. enlarged vertical slice view: www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/QY09521-25e.jpgMore on this page: www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/spring_2017-12.html#jun15---------------------------- At sunrise June 27, 2017 in the White Mountains, bristlecone pine, pinus longaeva, 6100x6000 pixels 2 frame 2 column 1 row 9 image focus stack stitch blend A6000 60mm. enlarged vertical slice view: www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/QZ09716-09724-2x1ve.jpgMore on this page: www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/summer_2017-13.html#jun27---------------------------- June 26, 2017, a glorious Sierra juniper, juniperus occidentalis ssp australis, wind monarch above Lake Aloha in Desolation Wilderness. enlarged vertical slice view: www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/RB00815-17e.jpgMore on this page: www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/summer_2017-14.html#jul26

What? There's not a thread started about trees? Here is a boojum tree from the Boyce Thompson Arboretum of southern Arizona Great example of an evolutionary anachronism. Big pokey branches only through the middle part of the tree. They evolved to help prevent extinct animals like gomphotheres & giant ground sloths from pushing the tree over. Bigger things didn't exist (and no need for pokeys way up high) and smaller things weren't of concern. No one has told this tree yet that those animal threats have been gone for 10+ thousand years.
