I was deployed helping with the hurricane relief efforts in south Florida during hurricane Irma. I unfortunately got hurt while deployed with a broken ankle and a broken left elbow. I had a plate and 8 screws put into my ankle and I tore 3 ligaments in my elbow. I really want to get back to where I was before I got hurt. I was training for section hiking the AT and other long trails. Has anyone been thru similar injuries and if so what gear or sports medicine braces, etc helped
Thanks

Ouch! Thank you for your work, and our sympathy for your injuries! And welcome to the Forums, too. I don't know that I have a lot of help to offer here. I hope your MD has given you some good PT recommendations, because I'm thinking a professional is what you really need. I haven't had to come back from anything worse than sprained ankles, so the only advice I can offer (from long, repeated, painful experience of minor injuries) is not to try to rush it. Concentrate on making sure everything is strong before you push on--re-injuring yourself is the worst, and there will be lots of unstable ligaments, etc. Probably not telling you anything you don't know! I know some folks here have had bigger injuries-- jazzmom?

Ouch -- sorry to hear about your injuries. I've broken both ankles (separately) and one was a tib-fib that required surgery, plates, screws, etc. Aside from the cast/boot that was required while they healed, I never used any type of brace or special gear.
I was pretty lazy about physical therapy. For me, it was expensive, inconvenient (scheduling-wise) and really boring -- not a comment on PT itself at all, just me. I slogged through maybe a month of it on each ankle. Strength came back pretty quickly; balance was the major issue. Downhill skiing 6 months after surgery was terrifying. I decided to try yoga and, WOW, that was a godsend.
I'll be honest, it literally took years for the surgery-ankle to get back to "normal" in terms of balance. The casted ankle came back much quicker even though I was a lot older. I highly recommend yoga.

I’m lucky and my pt is covered. I know it’s a long road ahead. Just didn’t know if anyone had good luck with braces or other support devices while hiking. I hate this air cast lol.
