Just a note that the permitting process for the two are completely different.
Hermit Trail is in the National Park and you need a permit from GCNP. If you call the Backcountry Office, they can tell you whether one is available for your dates since the lottery was Sept 1. But I agree that you'll probably find a permit available for some use area by walking up.
Havasu Falls is a whole different story, IMO. It's on tribal lands, not the National Park. Permits for the campground in Supai have to be obtained in advance, by phone, from the tribe. No walk-ups, everything pre-paid, no refunds. I wouldn't count on it being easy to get. Not even easy to get them on the phone. I was just there over the weekend and, yes, they're strict about the permits -- they give out wristbands, so it's really obvious.
