Have you tried to go a shorter safer passage to get used to it again? I work with people with disabilities and to help them with travel training we would go through an indoor course. Maybe try going down a place with railing at first under you get a good feeling for balance then onto a paved downhill decent. Then in awhile you will be back to going at a normal rate downhill again. Hope it works.

You write like going slow and relaxed is an issue? Instead I'll turn that around and state hiking including backpacking down routes and trails as though time to do so (or mileage) is most important is not much a reason to be out in backcountry, wilderness, and natural areas. Of course there seems to increasingly be much about time and miles traveled in the minds of recent enthusiasts, especially those on thru trails as though it is a goal or even something with some to brag about haha. That is not why the vast majority of we more experienced folk go out into those areas and keep going back year after year instead of burning out for what are otherwise shallow "challenge" type reasons. That noted, yes there are times and intineraries where more time and mileage have valid value but what I am relating is when that becomes the usual goal obsession. There are reasons why the rest of us go out to these places. They are wonderful with incredible fascinating complexity allowing we earth beings to get back to our creature roots.

You write like going slow and relaxed is an issue? I'll suggest that it's the "timid" part that's of concern. Slow is just fine.
