We are backpackers. We KNOW the earth is not flat, because we have hiked up the hills! Oh, wait, that's not what he means...
Of course the earth is flat. It is held up by 4 elephants on the back of a giant turtle.

I really don't think anyone in the flat earth movement really believes the earth is flat. The "fool" is a recent convert. Needed funding.
What I see with this is satirical comment.

Sir Terry would be proud. I could have guessed you'd know.

We citizens might wonder if that person is serious or just playing a media game by claiming something they know is ridiculous simply for publicity. If he actually does launch and we find there is no reason from his life background that he may simply be trying to commit suicide then we may assume he is just a twisted fool. But if he finds an excuse like if his rocket fizzles then I would suspect a game.
In any case there are unfortunately fair numbers of ignorant people with emotional issues and illiterates that believe loony things and many are not only poorly educated but also easily manipulated by those promoting ridiculous ideas. And it is dismaying how many in this era also understand science only at a comic book level that is not surprisingly reflected in the considerable demographic watching superhero movies.
Interestingly I seem to receive a fair amount of traffic on this informational web page on my site from those arguing for and against flat earth:
www.davidsenesac.com/Information/line_of_sight.html
If one Yahoo searches on "visual line of sight" the above on my site will come up on the first page of hits. And from that I receive several emails each year from those asking to explain issues on the calculation because apparently somewhere out in the cyberworld those people are engaged in debating the issue.
Years ago I thought it was because a few savvy debate types were just using it as a way to keep their debate skills honed siding with something ridiculous and then challenging others to try and argue against them. It is a way of by picking on ordinary people because many people use such pathetic argumentation with little familiarity with fallacies that a pro can usually get them all twisted up looking stupid. Something my logic and debate professor used to engage in with all but a couple of us in his class. And not a few people do likewise online with Young Earth Creationists. But then over the years have received enough emails from people that due to the nature of their text were obviously serious believing the earth is flat. And they seem incapable using typical obvious informational resources either online or via traditional ways as with books at bookstores or libraries to on their own learn the simplest of things.
All this might just give the rest of us a few laughs if it were not for the reality that they also VOTE. David www.davidsenesac.com/2017_Trip_Chronicles/2017_Trip-Chronicles-0.html

Many prominent scientists also belong to the Flat Earth Society. Joined as a means to get the newsletters, keeping informed on the society, and also as sort of a gag.

Way to recycle rocket man! Yeah, there's a good chance he's going to recycle himself. IIRC, steam occupies 600x the volume of the water it came from, which is what makes it so powerful (e.g. steam trains and boilers), as well as dangerous.

My wife read this story this AM. She said he spent +20K bucks on the rocket, to go 1,500ish feet into the air or was that 15Kish; compare to a 400 dollar airline ticket, and when he lands he will be announcing his intent to run for the Governor of California.
I do not have anything nice to write about a man who believes in a flat earth but I do believe he will find that the earth is hard.
