just some initial brainstorming, looking for car camping, maybe cabin rental also, maybe even private cabin rental near park. somewhere in southern appalachians with good kayaking (not looking for rapids, just easy stuff) and day hiking trails both short and long. any suggestions are appreciated. thanks

Indian Boundary would be my suggestion as well. Only issue with it is that its closed until May iirc.
You could reserve the McNabb Creek Group camp in Cherokee NF. Its only closed in the very coldest months of the winter. Lots of hiking in the area, and a ~20 minute drive up to Indian Boundary lake for flatwater paddling. I'm not positive of the lake access during the closed season for the Campground. More rugged whitewater-ish paddling on the Tellico river (a few minutes away), if the water is high enough.
Another option is the Davidson River Campground, near Brevard NC. There is a group camp option open year round (I think). Tons of hiking, and decent paddling on the french broad river. There are cabins near the entrance to the NF, although its a privately owned group of cabins, & quite expensive.
Hope this helps.

there's Cheoah Point Campground over on Lake Santeelah... I've never stayed there but there's beautiful scenery on Santeelah. Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is next door, and easy access to the Cherohala Skyway and the falls over on Big Snowbird Creek.

another area I was thinking about is Bald River Gorge. there are a string of small campgrounds along North River Road and Tellico River Road.... the Donley Cabin is nearby, (historic and primitive), and can be rented for cheap. I can't think of any flatwater in the area to paddle, unless you make the trip over to Santeelah, but tons of great hiking and of course the falls along the Tellico. I think there are cabins you can rent in the Green Cove community, too.

Gee Creek State Park, now known as the Hiwassee/Ocoee state park on the Hiwassee river might fit your needs. The Gee Creek campground is right on the Hiwassee, and the Ocoee is just a short drive away. outdoorchattanooga.com/land/hiwassee-ocoee-scenic-river-state-park/ There's also a nice Campground on Chilohowee Mountain, about half way between the Hiwassee/Ocoee...
