For that purpose, I think the BeFree would be worth a try. It is extremely light and packable, she can just throw it in her vest and use it if needed. As long as she's gentle with it, she hopefully wouldn't have the durability problems I had. Any of the filters I know of (such as the Hiker Pro) that could fill her hydration bladder via a quick connect would be much heavier, and an inline filter would mean she has to pull out and fill the bladder at a water source. She can either drink directly out of the BeFree, or use it to pretty quickly refill her water bladder. As long as it doesn't fail (supposedly they have fixed the weld problem on the flasks), I think this would be the ideal filter for her needs.

Previously, on races over 30ish miles, she would carry our hiker pro filter in her pack in case she ran out of water and was in a bad situation. What about a Lifestraw or similar? Or a filter that could go in-line on her hydration tube? Now that's an idea!....I wonder if the sawyer mini could work as an inline filter on the hydration tube? The bladder could be used as the squeeze bag to fill the little collapsible bottles on the shoulder straps, and then re-filled to be used as a normal hydration bladder with an inline filter.

It could work, although adapters and some MYOG skill may be required. The Mini is slow, so for races she'd probably prefer the PointOne.

Sawyer doesn't publish numbers, because they're variable depending on how clean the filter is. But given that the PointOne has a larger surface area it'll generally be faster than the Mini (like bandwidth in electronics - it's a bigger diameter pipe). Andecdotal evidence here and elsewhere agrees. Sawyer Mini Point One Flow Rate

I sometimes bring this Platypus Big Zip LP Reservoir. I have my Sawyer filter set up as an in-line filter for it. The big zipper top makes it really easy to get water from almost any source. and you don't have to worry about sitting there and filtering the water because you just filter it as you drink. This also allows you to use it as a gravity filter for making you meals at camp.

What about a Lifestraw or similar? Here is a video about a Lifestraw filter.
