I have 4 days (3 nights) coming up and I'm strongly considering the Foothills Trail, which I've never hiked. At a moderate pace taking time for full enjoyment (and taking it easy on my 60 year old knees) I figure I can do about half of it. The question is which half, or section in the middle. I'm looking for recommendations. Today I found the Foothills Trail Conference web site, which appears to be a good resource.

I was unaware of this trail.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

driftwoody, what are you looking for as far as mileage goes per day? Also, are you looking for an out and back or will you be doing a shuttle? (btw, I have no idea about shuttles in the area, we generally take two vehicles if we're going to do a point to point) There are some sections along parts of the trail that have some pretty intense hills (gorges section above Lake Jocassee in particular) but there are also some more mild sections along the Chattooga River.

I was looking to do 10-12 miles a day with a shuttle service, but I decided against the Foothills Trail for this trip. I started planning too late to order the map & guidebook and I have no flexibility for the trail days, as I have to be in Fort Myers Florida Thursday night Nov 9 (traveling from Chicago to the Winter Worlds senior softball tournament).
I decided to do a variety of hikes in North Georgia, including Jacks River Falls via the Beech Bottom Trail.
Thanks for the response.

driftwoody if you ever decide to give the Foothills Trail a go let me know. It's a great trail and winter is the best time for it IMHO (fewer folks along the Chattooga and better views of the lake that time of year).

No doubt you've been to Jacks River Falls many times. I'll be heading there from Bald River Falls in Tennessee. The directions I can find to the Beech Bottom trail head are from Cisco Georgia via old highway 2. Do you know of a better way to the trail head coming from the north and west? The roads would have to be suitable for a regular car with no extra ground clearance.

Yes, I've been there many times.....Going in at Cisco on Highway 2 will take you farther south than you need to be and leave you on a dirt forest service road for way to many miles. That's the way you want to go if you're going to the south end of the Cohutta's, Hickory Creek etc....
I take HWY US 411 to Ladd springs road (SR313) and turn left (east) on Ladd springs road. There's a Marathon convenience/gas station (or is it Mapco) on the right at the intersection. That's a black top road until you get to Willis Springs...and then it'll turn into dirt as you enter the Cherokee National Forest.
Take that all the way till it dead ends at Alaclusky/Jacks River (spelling)trail head. At the trail head/dead end, turn back north on Pevine road. Theres a sign there that says Slyco Creek Campground 3 miles. Go roughly 2 miles and turn east on Little Frog loop road. If you get to the Sylco creek campground you missed the turn.... The trail head parking area is on the left about 2 miles up.
You could also come in off Cookson Creek road from the north off hwy 64, but again, that's a lot of 15mph forest service road...
There's some camp sites in the Beech Bottoms, and there's a couple of nice ones a mile or so south of the falls, on the river.
Tipi goes there quite often too....maybe he'll chime in..

Thank you very much @gunslinger, I see those roads on my DeLorme Gazetteer. Without having been there I couldn't be sure if they were passable for a small car with no extra ground clearance.

Maybe I can get a week off in the late winter and do the entire trail. I would very much like to.

I pull a horse trailer on them. There are a few pot holes but it’s a far better road than going 2 through Cisco.

Clearly late on this thread but wanted to chime in just in case someone (the OP or any others) come back to it for questions. I've hiked nearly all of the the FHT. Some of it I've hiked 3 or 4 times. I am fairly familiar with it and can maybe help if anyone is planning to go out that way. I also have contact information for shuttles there. Happy to help in any way.
