Rebecca and I come from the same hungry tribe after hiking that has even always been my contract. My main sin is a love of sugar and sweet and doughy stuff. (Well truth is a large breadth of junk food is not always kept at bay.) Like tonight a several white chocolate strawberry creams, caramel vanilla ice cream, 3 muscateer's bar, cheddar cheese pop corn that I heated and then poured fine salt and then shook up washed down with a sugary pink grapefruit citrus drink I add even more white sugar to so it is super sweet.

davesenesac, that's a lot of sugar! I don't skip sugar entirely, but even when backpacking I keep it at a modest level. That's been true for long enough that I don't like things too sweet--so it's dark chocolate for me, and homemade cookies or cake for a treat.

I've just made peace with the fact that my ability to eat "real food" for the first 2-3 days at altitude is going to be limited. Yup. Most of us have enough stored fat and protein that going 2-3 days without eating a real meal will have no impact as long as hydration, electrolyte and carb requirements are met.

I would say it's survivable, but to say it will have no impact... well, maybe not for you. For me, skipping even one meal results in headaches, irritability, and loss of energy. On reflection, maybe that's why I don't lose my appetite?

Irritability, loss of energy (otherwise known as 'bonking') are my 2 main traits when I miss a meal. On trail, I already am not consuming enough calories to replace my expenditure, so skipping one meal entirely would really have me at a disadvantage. I can't remember the last time I lost my appetite.

I can't remember the last time I lost my appetite. I'm starting to think we hikers fall into two camps: those who lose their appetite at the rise of a trail, and those of us who are still hungry when puking our guts out.

There's a third camp: people who probably could eat, but are too exhausted to bother until some arbitrary time in the future.

Yeah, I wouldn't say that I lose my appetite so much as that I lose the ability to eat and keep food down (at high elevation). It would be easier if I also lost my appetite, although there is a sort of circular thing at work here--the inability to keep food down does seem to reduce one's desire to eat, even if your body is calling for fuel..

I always have it in the back of my head that I need to eat if the hike lasts more than 8 hours. I am yet to "bonk" while still on the trail, instead it's after I get back to my vehicle. 15-30 minutes of driving and I'm so out if it I'm not safe to drive. It's gotten to the point that I really need to plan to sleep some in the car if I have more than the 30 minutes of driving to do. One of my more recent hikes was White Mountain Peak and took me just over 8 hours. When I got back to the car I was fine, but not much later my head was bouncing off the steering wheel. I slept for an hour, nibbled on some Cashews and drove late into the night.
I think my loss of appetite is more related to physical exertion than anything else.

Are you saying that you will do an 8-hour hike without eating? No wonder you can’t drive home! I’d keep trying to find something you can/will eat, because that’s a long time to work out without food.

Personally, I can't imagine going more than 3 hours without eating something. 8 hours, and i'd be eating the steering wheel.
