Hello! A friend and I are looking for a 3-4 day (30-40 miles) backpacking trip in mid-December. We are based in Eastern Kansas but are willing to drive a decent bit (12ish hours) for a great hike. We are fine with the cold but do not want to have to prepare for anything too cold. I would say the low temps shouldn't dip much lower than 15 - 20 degrees. Also, some snow is fine but I would prefer to avoid too much post-holing. We are both in good shape, and I have quite a bit of backpacking experience in a variety of conditions. This will be my friend's second backpacking trip, though. I am quite drawn to mountains but clearly that is a problem if we want to avoid too much snow and cold.
We wondered whether something in Eastern Tennessee or something in the Southeast might be a possibility. Unfortunately, I have had a hard time finding resources about winter backpacking trips in these areas. Does anyone have any suggestions or will anything in the mountains in that area be too cold/snowy? I am sure there will be a ton of variability, so we are okay having a few options that we chose from last minute depending on weather forecasts.
Another good option on the table is the Buffalo River Trail in Arkansas, but I have already hiked it and would like to explore a different part of the country. But, if anyone has other suggestions, we are definitely open! Thank you for your help!

on average you're not gonna find more than a few inches on the ground at that time of year, even on the highest ridges. obviously it's possible a poorly timed storm could come through, but I wouldn't hesitate scheduling a trip at that time of year with perhaps a lower elevation Plan B on the backburner. consider your trailhead, too. you could get closed roads even without a deep snow, so a lower elevation trailhead might be wise.

The Ouachita's in southwestern Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma would be a good place at that time of the year.
