I am planning a trip in the spring for Jacks river falls and don't know much about the bear activity in the area. I have tried looking it up and can't seem to find anything that makes it clear. I'm new to the south, and all of my experience is much further north where bear ARE a concern during certain times of the year.
Any other tips on what to pack would be great. I don't know that there would be anything very different in the way of necessities, but it never hurts to ask!

It has been a few decades since I was in that area. I don't remember anything significant other than using good bear bag procedures. If memory served me correctly, we had more issues with other small fury varmints trying to get into our stuff.

I'm on a phone now but when I get on a real computer---I'll find the info...
But camping around jacks river falls---and about a mile or two above and below it---it prohibited between I think may and November...
Other areas ---such as Panther falls, is open for camping...
However, hang food and have good food behavior....
Bears are active in the area...

Hey Tipi....
Haven't been in the northern part this year.....see much fire damage? Much down timber?
The south part of the Cohutta's got hit pretty hard....
Yea, I guess the view from Big Frog is better once the leaves drop....

The fire was bad as it consumed most of the Cohutta but the damage is minimal and I hiked many of the trails without encountering too many blowdowns---although Hickory Creek trail is 50% cleared. I usually backpack in the Citico/Slickrock area and the Big Frog/Cohutta is 100% better trailwise and much better maintained.
