How about people filling their water bottle at the drinking fountain, while you stand and wait for a quick drink!

How about people filling their water bottle at the drinking fountain, while you stand and wait for a quick drink! My favorite version of that is when the bottle isn't empty yet, but they don't want anyone else to get that water before they're ready. A guy blocked the water fountain yesterday while he drank a whole quart in about 15 separate gulps until he was ready for refill. It was worse, because I had been waiting at a respectful distance for somebody else to finish drinking when he barged in. I just kept thinking "move or die", but neither happened.

When you're built like a NFL fullback, this is quite fun. I can only imagine. I'm not quite as big as a fullback ...

I use the small gym in our Headquarters building before I start work. I get to the gym around 1930hrs and I'm in there for about an hour.
There is one old guy who is in the gym by 1830. He will still be there three hours later. Mostly he walks around talking to people, shouting inane encouragement and counting their reps for them. It really gets fun when younger officers come in for some reason to see him and also pretend to work out. Mostly they're laughing, joking, singing and loudly cheering when one of them finally does a set of some exercise.
In short, it's a gym, not a social club. Exercise, clean up any mess you made and leave, that's it.

it's a gym, not a social club. I work out at the Y. Part of their philosophy is that they ARE a social club. But people are pretty good about not blocking the equipment while socializing. And especially for the older members, the social aspect is important, based on research. What I really love is that since I go in the off hours, I see older people much more than young ones. The old folk may be there to socialize, but they are also there to work out--and they/we are NOT there to stand around posing and looking good.

There's a difference between using a mirror while exercising to help establish a mind/muscle connection and help ensure proper form versus trying to impress people in a gym. But,posing itself can actually have muscular benefits such as awareness, definition, etc.,wherever done(not that I ,actually, spend much time on this).I prefer to train at home where I don't have to deal with other people's negative opinions.

My point being that those of us who are a bit over the hill and picking up speed on the way down don't try to impress because there's not much hope of it I believe that the use describe is why there are mirrors in the weight room?

I wasn't addressing your post specifically, but that is the reason.I have one on a door, but off-kilter to where I train,so only use it on certain exercises where working on the form/connection issues are most helpful.Or,perhaps on a few warmups.

Again - the squat rack is for squats. It is NOT for curling an empty bar.
If the mirror wasn't there the rack wouldn't get nearly as much use.

I wasn't addressing your post specifically, but that is the reason. I always kind of knew that, but nice to have it confirmed--that there's some reason for the mirrors besides either feeding vanity or making the less-shapely feel bad. It's almost always only in the after-school hours when the older teens and college age guys are in the gym that I get rant-y. They seem to be the main ones who do obnoxious stuff. Sometimes in the mid-day I do have to be patient with people who move very slowly, but you know what? I have infinite respect for someone who struggles to walk but still comes to the gym and does what they can. I'll be patient.

You don't have to convince me,I belonged to a commercial gym for a year while I was moving. It had state of the art equipment but I just couldn't do effective workouts due to all the distractions, and all the other things everyone here brings up. Once I got my equiptment set back up in my garage, I haven't looked back and am able to do many things that piss me off when others do in a commercial setting.

Ahhhh, good times at the gym for the next month. Most of the college 'kids' will be heading home and I will have a gym, nearly, all to myself. I use this time to try out equipment, that I've seen others use.

If it takes half an hour to do a total of 15 reps on the ab machine, you might want to rethink your workout. (Meanwhile, four people are now lined up who only have that exercise left to do).

If it takes half an hour to do a total of 15 reps on the ab machine, you might want to rethink your workout. This is why I avoid machines when I can. So I do various types of planks, russian twists, V-ups, rollouts, reverse situps (requires a large ball or stand) and other things that I don't even know the names for.

Please ,no jonesing from machine to machine.Instead, camp out at the bench press station, where you might actually build some muscle, while irritating all the sheep.
