Oi! Now hold on there. I go to a University Gym and the students are at the gym in full force, for now. They are working out hard hoping they will fit in the size to small bikinis.
I am most likely the obnoxious one being fat, old, and ugly. It's a wonder they allow me into the gym.
Soon, school will be out and the Gym will go empty for the summer.

This is a sweeping generalization, but I encounter almost nobody who might fit in those categories behaving rudely. I applaud everyone who shows up to improve their fitness, especially those who could feel like they don't fit in. Every good workout is an easier day on the trail and another day stolen from decrepitude!

My gym pet peeve: I'm sitting on the bench tying my shoes. Someone comes out of the shower naked, goes to their locker right next to me, and bends over to get something from the bottom of their locker. My face is two inches from stuff I always hoped I wouldn't have to see at that distance. What is wrong with people?
My Planet Fitness pet peeve: They absolutely do not teach gym etiquette to newcomers. If a guy has hoarded ten sets of weights around him on the floor and is sitting there doing nothing and you say, "Can I work in with you?" you get get a blank stare. I stopped asking to work in because no one at PF understands the term.

This is quite an entertaining thread - the laughs helped me out of a stressful mood. I'm bookmarking this thread to read over and over again when I need some humorous diversion.
On a serious note, if anyone really wants to discourage her or himself from using a gym, read the terms of the indemnification clause in your contract. Obviously I haven't read every single contract, but the ones I've read do have the indemnification, hold harmless and defense (the really critical aspect) clauses.
This was actually upheld by a Michigan court some years ago. A woman injured at a gym sued but the court held that she had no cause of action because she waived her rights when she executed the contract with the indemnification clause. Bad, bad news. I've never considered a gym since.
As to humorous participants, I used to get a kick out of the ones who came and showed off, talking louder than others, bragging about their workouts and how much they did and how often. At least at that time selfie takers weren't obsessive, but geez...how inappropriate in a gym, especially in the locker room.

Is anything really appropriate in a roomful of schmucks?

My face is two inches from stuff I always hoped I wouldn't have to see at that distance. Ah yes, that's a good one! It's happened to me more than once. There's also sort of the flip side: when you're clad in nothing but stray drops of water and somebody decides they need to conduct operations at the adjoining locker until they're comfortable enough with the alignment of the planets to let you proceed.

Most such clauses include such extreme overreach that I've assumed they're unlikely to hold up in court. Even though they apparently sometimes do, I continue to hope that instances of true negligence will be deemed as such. I'm grateful that for as little as I pay, my gym is well-maintained and safe to the extent that people use the equipment safely, which to my great surprise they almost universally do. Considering the prevalence of boneheaded behavior in the world, I'm struck by how much less likely people are to endanger themselves and others in the gym than they are on the road.

Bet you can't beat my Planet Fitness fee: $7.50 a month. Why so cheap? Because Planet Fitness discovered that literally 95% of new members go to the gym exactly once and never return. So they sign up thousands more people than could ever actually fit in the gym. I don't think PF is even about working out. It's about selling a product that is highly appealing to the buyer, yet immediately loses its appeal after the sale. They increase the appeal by selling it dirt cheap. Ingenious!!!! The ultimate passive income stream.

Suspect you are right, Farley. When you pay over $100 a month for a family Y membership, you may take more seriously the need to go get your money's worth. I have considered looking for something cheaper, but most of them don't have pools. And I like working out at the Y with the old folks.

As Dave Draper says "a good gym is worth it's weight in gold". Of course, the corollary is there are a lot of lousy gyms out there. My garage is the right gym for me.If I was more interested in the fitness sections and not mostly free weights, there would be more options.

rebeccadMy wife and I use the BSU Rec center for 10 bucks a month; it has 2 pools. One of the, many, things I like is the 3rd/4th year Kinesiology students eager to help with advice.

In a moment of genius, SFSU decided several years ago that not even faculty, let alone their spouses, could use the gym services any more. I got bumped first, and joined the Y at a pretty cheap rate. Later, my husband joined me, and we had to take a higher rate. Makes me crazy, though, since the University has perfectly adequate facilities that we used happily for many years (though for some reason they felt there had to be a separate time for faculty when students weren't present).

considered looking for something cheaper, Don't you live near the ocean? You can't get much cheaper than that, and that's where I often see triathlon types training around here.I use it mostly for stretching,jumping/spinning/diving in the waves, and a few back strokes, while cycling.Plus, you get a dose of salt water therapy.

If I got a wetsuit I could swim in the Bay, but that wouldn't be very convenient. The ocean is close enough, but like I say, it eats people. Got 3 teenagers a couple of weeks ago :-( I stay out of that water.

Even though they apparently sometimes do, I continue to hope that instances of true negligence will be deemed as such. Correct. That language is to protect the gym from non-negligent acts. Like when some stunningly handsome doofus clocks himself in the chin while doing the jerk portion of a clean & jerk, staggers back, cracks his head against the wall, propels the weight forward, and hits his training partner in the knee with the bouncing weighted bar. ETA: In full disclosure... neither I he nor his training partner sued the gym. But if we they tried, the standard indemnity language would have protected the gym.
