Ha,for someone who does all their own bike maintenance I sure am good at procrastinating until absolutely necessary to keep the bike running...

I did a senior moment, concerning bike maintenance. I took my trike in to the shop at our bike coop, to lube the wheel bearings which I thought had not been serviced for three years. I removed a front wheel, removed the disk brake disk, removed the cartridge bearings, and popped the seal out. It was filled with a clean looking blue grease. Then I remembered that I'd put Phil Wood grease in those bearings 6 months ago. Crap, I'd totally forgotten about it. No problem, I'd just do the rear wheel while I was there. I knew I hadn't lubed those bearings for years and I checked my bike maintenance log on my phone memos to be sure. Removed the cassette, removed the axle, tapped the cartridge bearings out. Wait a minute, these look pretty clean. Oh crap, this wheel is my winter wheel (heavier rim, studded tire), almost brand new. It was my summer wheel that needed the lube job. I put it back together and declared victory. Nobody at the shop needs to know what I had done, which was to spend two hours fooling around for nothing. I'm looking forward to warmer weather and cleaner pavement for some bike rides. I'm taking Fridays off now, so I can go on a long ride every friday, in addition to my commuting miles. My longer distance bike is a carbon fiber high racer, the Encore made by John Schlitter.

I rode my bike 40 miles today It looks like I have been off my bike just over a month now.I think the power straps were aggravating my knee tightening it up,so I haven't cycled since January 8th.It is better now and I could probably ride now without the right strap as riding w/o the straps was manageable, but I plan to stay off the bike longer to let my knee recover 100%.

Maybe I've asked this before but how about clipping in? I keep mine kind of loose so I get some float so I don't lock my foot into one path. That may allow your knee to track better.

Since ,I keep the straps loose they do have adjust-ability.I'm not totally sure what the issue is(but I have a few clues) and once my knee heals fully I'll try different ideas until I get it right. But,the issue with clipping in is I like to ride with my flipflops not stiff bike shoes with cleats as I spend considerable time off the bike walking, etc. With just the platforms if my knee gets tight I can move my foot way forward,or pretty much wherever I want to best relieve any stress.

I rode 30 miles on Sunday. That felt good, in an "I like to suffer" kind of way. About time. I need to restock my BodyGlide

I've been commuting to work every day - for the past 8 years, on this. It built for comfort and hits 30 mph on my downhill section of the commute. My heart is in the training zone for about 30 minutes per day. I have a plastic bubble on the front now, and have removed the saddle bags and rack on the back. The bubble (fairing) really helps keep my feet warm in the winter.

I've been commuting to work every day I'm considering one of those in two years when my daughter graduates and I can commute and generally bike more. Assuming you had a different bike before this how did you feel when you made the transition?

So glad to see so many more riders! I commute to work now and then on an old '87 Bridgestone Radac -usually joining after-work group rides in the area. Hoping to do Blood Sweat and Gears again this year in Valle Crucis! I like to ride with my flipflops not stiff bike shoes with cleats I did a 70 miler with some really soft soled shoes in toe cages a few years back and it absolutely decimated my knees -just putting on some very stiff soled trail sneakers on subsequent rides was instant relief. I do have cycling shoes and clips now as well but it was definitely the lack of support that did me in. With the change of shoes also came adjustments in saddle height and position to account for sole thickness -even a mere 1/4 inch made a huge difference in knee comfort after 30 milers!

Sad.
On a happier note, it's been insanely warm here, so I've been biking. Did a random ride through the western half of SF today, grinning broadly as I passed all the cars in the endless traffic jams. Worst I've seen in a long time, and very glad I wasn't driving!
