I think I’m in withdrawal. I’ve not been on my road bike since November (I did ride the “grocery bike” about 6 miles one day around Xmas). Currently said road bike is in Maine, and I am in New Zealand, so I realized that it’s going to be about 7 months or more without riding. We may try to get something with 2 wheels during our time in Christchurch, but have no idea if that is practical or even possible.

I hope you weren't looking for sympathy. LOL! Have a fantastic time! Are you there for the entire 7 months?

No, I don’t deserve sympathy (though my butt will need some when I finally get back to riding; ordinarily that is my primary form of exercise since I can’t run anymore, so...). I’m fine while we’re doing lots of tramping, but we will settle in Christchurch for a month or so, and it will be harder to stay fit there if I can’t find a bike. We are in NZ for nearly 4 months, then driving back across the US for another month +. We parked the bikes in Maine in early November, and stayed there (hiking and carrying packs around) until mid-December.

Happy trails from the Great White Northern Plains and Central Rockies: I was working at home writing objections to an Environmental Analysis for a mountain bike park that is being proposed in a wildlife management area on a local National Forest that does not have existing trails. I missed spin class for the freaking thing. SO I HAD TO RIDE NO more loss of roadless right? Pedaling my way into the TPA. [grins even though my pearly whites are under a buff and neoprene mask] Oh wait, this can't count. 32 year old mountain bike on city pathway. Not road bike. My bad [more grins] And that is my snowboard helmet.

Hey, we threw some money at the bike problem, and bought a couple of well-used hybrid bikes, which we can sell back to the shop for half what we paid, after 2 months use. We’ll make up some of that in savings on gas costs, as we use them for errands around town, and I’m happy to be riding, even if about 12 miles is my limit for that kind of bike, and without the proper clothing. Still, we may see if we can push it a bit—there are some roads and paths in the Port Hills we’d like to ride. Unfortunately, we traded the Rav4 we were renting in for a much smaller (and cheaper) car so can’t put both bikes in the car and drive to a TH. We can, however, pay $4 each way to put one on a bus and ride that to the end of the line...

First 20 miler afternoon ride of the season on my hybrid Kona. Since January all my cycling has been on a studded-up and pogie mitt dressed hardtail MTB. Not a whole lot of 20 mile days, but better than the previous winters. I am going to leave the MTB rigged for next winter.

Another article from Outside magazine from this author. I guess I just like the way he writes. He's seems to be their bike editor. But make no mistake: lots of people do hate you. It’s science! Yes, a recent study found that “around half of non-cyclists view cyclists as ‘less than fully human.’” Furthermore:
Of the study’s participants, 17 percent admitted to having used their car to deliberately block a cyclist, 11 percent said they’d deliberately driven their car close to a cyclist, and nine percent had used their car to cut a cyclist off.link

I can't even imagine seeing an individual as "less than fully human".

17 percent admitted to having used their car to deliberately block a cyclist Of the few bad interactions I have, this is the most common one. Country road in ex-burbs, but heavy rush hour traffic due to office parks along the road. 20-30 cars at 4-way intersection. I glide by on the 8' shoulder. Someone decides I'm "breaking the rules" and drives into the shoulder to cut me off*. Never works... they either can't pull over far enough or I ride on the dirt/grass since my commuter is a mountain bike. As I pass them I laugh at their small penis. *Tend to be the same people who get mad when I occupy a lane of traffic at a stop light, rather than stay on the shoulder.

On my commute this morning, a road cyclist easily passed me. He got about 1/10th of a mile ahead, then the hill started. A bit before the top, me on my 35# mountain bike with all my commuting gear and pack, caught up to him. Instead of passing him, I drafted behind him as the ultimate insult. LOL!
I guess I'm pushing out some watts now.

With my foot still not up for serious hikes, I’m doing 10-25 miles most days (10 is my minimum, and I haven’t really gone over 25, but I’m doing the longer riders 3 or more times a week). Hauling the bike all over creation is a pain, but I was happy to have it on our trip to Washington, where I rode around Burien, far North Seattle, and Lummi Island, and today around Ashland Oregon.

Well, I finally did it. I mean everyone else is doing it so how could I resist. But now that I have, I’ll be the first to admit it’s totally changed my life. Yes, I switched over to wider tires! Conti Sprinters now come in a 25mm width, and that added 3 mm really makes a difference.

Gravel. The new style. I've been sporting this look and bike for over a decade. I'm glad to see it's finally catching on. Outside Magazine Your New Guide to Cycling Style, As Informed by Gravel Times have changed. Espresso and aero everything are out, pour-over and flannel are in. Eben Weiss Dec 11, 2019Or another way to look at it is that bike fashion has shifted away from the Galactic Empire and gone decidedly more Rebel Alliance.link
