The Florida National Scenic Trail is a candidate and could use some good news as it is currently reeling from several large timberland companies being forced to put large tracts of land up for sale over the last few years resulting in major roadwalk sections for the trail in the Northern and Big Bend areas. The trail is critical in preserving a corridor of undeveloped wilderness running through the center of the state even as the coasts experience rapid development. The Florida Trail also ties in to the Pinhoti,Benton MacKaye,AT and IAT trails to form the Eastern Continental Trail running from Key West,Fl to the Canadian coast which in sum protect a corridor of wilderness along the entire eastern US and Canada. For these reasons I am asking southeasterners(and easterners) to consider voting for the Florida National Scenic Trail. If awarded the grant the money will go to the following project:
” St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge hosts approximately 40 beautiful miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail. This wildlife sanctuary is located along Florida’s Gulf Coast and is home to a diverse range of plant and animal life. Unfortunately, due to storm surges and seasonal tide fluctuations, hikers can no longer cross through and enjoy this beautiful refuge.
If awarded the Michelob ULTRA Superior Trails grant, 30 volunteers will work for 24 hours to construct a 350-foot boardwalk to ensure safe passage for hikers and sportsmen traveling through this 40-mile stretch along the Florida National Scenic Trail.”
