I took the quiz twice and second time changed a couple of answers. Still came out a griz both times...

Another wolf...but I suspect this may be pretty random... Uh, yeah. //Call the randomResults function, if the latestResults array has more than one item it will pick randomly and load that page var random = randomResult(); largestCategory = largestResults[random]; function goToPage() { switch (largestCategory) { case 'performanceHiking': location.href = 'http://www.vasque.com/USD/page/quiz-goat'; break; case 'backpacking': location.href = 'http://www.vasque.com/USD/page/quiz-bear'; break; case 'hiking': location.href = 'http://www.vasque.com/USD/page/quiz-wolf'; break; case 'trailRunning': location.href = 'http://www.vasque.com/USD/page/quiz-eagle'; break; default: location.href = 'http://www.vasque.com/USD/page/quiz-goat'; }
No great AI process at work here.

The lack of variety is kind of disappointing, but like I said, we are not exactly a veritable collection of endangered species here.

Given its promotional nature, I figure the list contains only animals we'd chose to represent us. No weasels, skunks, or opossums.

It is not random. At the end, it advertises the shoes your "animal" may be interested in purchasing. Clever way of targeting their marketing, if you ask me.

Wolf
but am more the pika, dancing across its talus then sitting quietly atop its favorite rock surveying the world

Yeah, it's kind of disappointing that we are not a veritable collection of endangered species in our own habitat. . . but I think you may have just pulled some code out of context and misinterpreted its purpose. I tried four different browsers, accessed the same poll multiple times, provided the same answers each time, and came up with the same animal result every time. That rather defies the notion that the entire process is random. You are a much more diligent and conscientious tester and experimenter than me. I simply looked at the javascript source briefly and made a quick surmisal of what was going on. I could have posted the entire script, but with all the setup and screen-shifting stuff, there was a LOT of it, and it was embedded in all the other stuff that you see in html. Yuck. What that may suggest is that if your results could categorize you as one of multiple animals, that is where the random results function takes over and simply randomly picks one of those animals you might match. But since I repeatedly got the same animal after providing the same answers on multiple browsers, it is doubtful that the entire process, beginning to end, is random. And you would be right. They make the following "casual equivalences" for the given choices (I did NOT take the quiz, so the choices given here might be recognizable to those who did - I merely examined the javascript on the page after getting there): “Snow” = “performanceHiking” “Sunshine” = “performanceHiking” ETA (for some reason, I missed these selections in the code earlier, but saw them when I stepped through the test - a dozen times, just for grins. Selection of the sequence "snow"|"sunshine", "run", "water", "scree", "outhouse", "charge", "faster" - which gives you a 4 "performanceHiking" and 3 "trailrunning" score, always turns up "goat"; changing the sequence to "snow"|"sunshine", "run", "dirt", "scree", "outhouse", "charge", "faster" sometimes makes you a goat, sometimes makes you an "eagle". I suspect that depends on the nature of the "random" algorithm or something else. Some of those things (if not all) are "seeded" with the current time, which would make WHEN you finished the quiz pivotal. In case anyone hadn't already guessed, I am easily engaged by the trivial.): "Run" = “performanceHiking” "Walk" = “hiking” “Dirt” = “hiking” “Water” = “performanceHiking” “Boulder” = “hiking” “Scree” = “trailRunning” “Outhouse” = “trailRunning” “Hole You Dug” = “backpacking” “Find Cover” = “hiking” “Chaaarge!!!” = “performanceHiking” “Farther” = “backpacking” “Faster” = “trailRunning” Those are the categories you are actually selecting with your responses. As the comment on the segment of code I posted earlier states: "if the latestResults array has more than one item (IOW, a tie) it will pick randomly and load that page". ETA: Though this was obvious to me (and probably is to most), the code I posted earlier dictates the equivalences: "performanceHiking" = "goat" "backpacking" = "bear" "hiking" = "wolf" "trailRunning" = "eagle" If you didn't fit any particular category - and probably more likely as a "safety valve" - the default is "goat". Programmers are always taught to provide something - anything - as a default in order to avoid an "empty condition" situation. So this group is actually more "hiking" than "backpacking". I guess the sponsoring magazine needs to change its name and logo. No, it's certainly not a finely-tuned process with deep psychological significance. I'm so very sorry. Heh, heh. It was just for fun to see what sort of answers the survey might yield. The lack of variety is kind of disappointing, but like I said, we are not exactly a veritable collection of endangered species here. It really is no big matter. Our responses are just a case of the difference in our personalities and such. When the wife sees a "pretty rock", she stoops and picks it up, brushing off any dirt or other debris, letting out a series of ohs and ahs. I stoop and look at the place from which she took the rock and marvel at the intricate architecture that existed beneath it: insect chambers and galleries. A friend of mine once sent me an email announcing that "THIS YEAR HAS 3 Friday the 13th dates - this ONLY HAPPENS ONCE EVERY 300 years!" Since calendars are pretty much a mathematical construct, I doubted it. So I wrote a simple PERL program and tested it. Yep, it happens every few years cyclically. Calendars are a human mathematical construct, however irregular. Some guy I once knew showed me a card trick that everyone thought was absolutely amazing. I spent a week working out the mechanics mathematically. I guess I'm the guy who lets the air out of the balloon for everyone. Sorry.

I figure the list contains only animals we'd chose to represent us. No skunks. Well now, that depends on the strength of the campfire chili.

“Snow” = “performanceHiking” “Sunshine” = “performanceHiking” “Dirt” = “hiking” “Water” = “performanceHiking” “Boulder” = “hiking” “Scree” = “trailRunning” “Outhouse” = “trailRunning” “Hole You Dug” = “backpacking” “Find Cover” = “hiking” “Chaaarge!!!” = “performanceHiking” “Farther” = “backpacking” “Faster” = “trailRunning” That part is interesting. Thanks.

It said I'm a leprosy-carrying 9 banded armadillo. Not sure what I did to deserve that.

Hey, it's just for fun! Some of you are taking it too seriously. The ancient ones said I am a wolf. I can live with that. Here I am with my friend Illich the timber wolf (early 1990's)
