Mountainsmith makes pretty good cheap tents, that are well designed and made with decent materials. Mountainsmith obviously cuts some corners here and there but they are good tents for the money. I have both the 2 person and 4 person models; the 4p has done quite well for me in wet and/or windy conditions. The 2 person model can be had for around $100 from Sierra Trading Post with their current 20% coupon, or less if you sign up for their Gearmail alerts and they send out a 30% or 35% off coupon code. Its a tent you could keep using instead of throwing away after one season. www.sierratradingpost.com/mountainsmith-celestial-tent-2-person-3-season~p~2747v/?filterString=tents~d~228%2F&colorFamily=01

You've already bought it so use it. It'll do the job for now.
Those who suggest you blow the budget and buy top quality now are looking at the situation from their current knowledge base and they forget what it was like when they were starting out as you are now. Fact is, you will want to buy better quality gear in the future but you do not yet have the experience to know know what that gear is. Everyone, in time, settles into their own backpacking style and it will not be until you get some miles on your boots that you'll know what you really want gear-wise. For example some experienced backpackers here see a tarp as being preferable to a tent while others swear a hammock is the only way to go. I usually just use a tarp but 10 years ago I would have never considered it.
Best advise I have for someone starting out is borrow what you can and rent where possible to try out different gear and don't hesitate to buy used. The nice thing with used gear is that you can always sell it for close to what you paid for it if you decide its not what you want.
