I went through this phase a few years ago of building a pantry of freeze-dried ingredients and creating trail recipes. Fun for a while but super time consuming. Anyway, the upshot was that I decided that I'm not a fan of freeze dried meats and, while I like the fruits and vegetables, they're pretty fragile and I end up with a lot of small crumbly pieces. I have a big bin full. They're great for chunky soups.
I buy a cheap base at the grocery store -- along the lines of cup-a-soup. The ones with a southwestern taste, e.g. black bean soup, are good. I then just add a random bunch of freeze dried vegetables. I might add tortillas-going-stale, chopped up fine. I might take a pouch of chicken. Single serve salsas (Tostitos make them) are a nice addition -- it occurs to me now that I could dehydrate that. The corn tortillas are what's used to thicken tortilla soups and they add calories.
Of course, you could "make" the soup base, too, but I can usually do the above with what I have in the house, which is a big bonus.

Jazzmom, definitely dehydrate your salsa! It rehydrates great (you can make it even thicker and yummier) and you get to choose your favorite salsa.

The corn tortillas are what's used to thicken tortilla soups and they add calories. Your tortillas remind me of the soups that Mom says they carried when she was a teen. Dried soups (I presume bouillon and veggies), then they gave the littlest kid a huge pile of dried bread (homemade). The bread went into the soup as thickener and filler, and also meant that the ends and bits didn't get wasted through the year.

I'm giving this a bump so I can find it again. We are planning a 10-day trip next summer, and I want to experiment with meals all winter so I can dial in the best and lightest/least bulky options, as food for that long will be stretching the limits of our carrying ability.

You'd be amazed at how much rice and M&Ms fit in a bear canister. Pour in some soup base, and you have meals and dessert. just need to separate at meal time.

just need to separate at meal time. Glad you added that. I was having a vision of a really interesting meal... I was thinking that we might do better to use bulk packaging, even if we are going to cook in bags (or in our bowls). That allows for more efficient packing, though more work at mealtime. Instructions could be added to my Nook as a PDF, so wouldn't add any weight or bulk.
