When any big storm approaches, and you mentally begin to check off the days food already in the gear room, the batteries in the drawer, the capacity of water storage in your collection of containers, and you begin to look forward to the power outage.

While grocery shopping you read the labels to calculate calories per ounce.

You wash out zip-lock bags and save them to use on backpacking trips.

Work friends at a group lunch interestingly discussing an approaching car camping trip over a coming holiday makes you yawn. At a party this weekend, someone was complaining about how much work it is to to camping (not the prep, but the actual camping) and the loads of laundry that need washing when you get home. The chest of drawers with your socks has several pair of heavy wool blend socks. I have one dresser drawer exclusively dedicated to backpacking and hiking clothes.

I love the note about the condiment packets. And we're guilty of many of the others.
We check out the instant and dried foods when we travel to exotic places: these dried figs from Crete might taste good in our trailmix. These instant soups from China might be good---but we can't read the labels as they are all in Kangi...
Best of all--when we're retired, we keep track of the weekends we DON'T backpack, rather than they other way around..

When you get up to leave, you look back to see if you left nothing but foot prints.
After eating dinner out, or leaving the gym or just getting up from a park bench, I take 2 steps, as does my wife, stop and look back to see if I left anything behind and did I leave a trace.

You make checklists for everything, even if it has nothing to do with backpacking.

Wait a minute--doesn't everyone reuse those things?? I throw mine out after one use. They are made from oil. Oil is pumped out of the ground. So by sending it to the landfill I am putting it back where it came from. The ultimate in recycling and environmental consciousness.

...you read threads like this to make sure you're a real backpacker. And to justify your quirks (sometimes politely referred to as "obsessive habits") by noting that others have similar or identical quirks ("See, I'm not so bad after all!").

Any old dress shirt that become too threadbare to wear to work (or t-shirts that develop a hole) get recycled as a "backpacking shirt". Similarly for wool sweaters.

DavidI'm always excited to hear about anyone getting outside, even if it's less "hardcore" than backpacking. What makes me yawn is hearing about trips to the mall, or Playland, but car camping? Kudos to anyone who wants to sleep outside!
