Success! This is not a backpacking solution due to the bulk, but this IS a damn fine sand anchor: I took a 10' piece of 1 1/4" pvc pipe (dwv sdr 26) and cut it into 7 pieces as shown above. They pounded into the (dry) sand very easily. Very solid anchors. The sea breeze got a bit crazy and we actually broke a pole on the Kelty Shelter, but my anchors never even wiggled. (I crashed two kites as well) Brandon will now get to test the Kelty warranty to get a new pole.

7? Why 7? That is a 3 corner tarp, with 3 mid-point tie outs, adding to 6 anchors.

Well, I was really wondering why anyone would cut a 10 ft section of pipe into odd numbers. 8 sections are 15 inches long. 6 sections are 20". 7 sections would probably be 18, if one took into account the overlap on the angled cuts. I am just accustomed to making even number items so the angled cuts can be shared with opposing ends of the tube.

I've always used bags, I'll be making some pvc stakes.
Another shelter I've used with some success on the beach is a simple big blue tarp. Bury one long side leeward, attach guy lines and anchor the windward side and it'll stand right up. Adjust the lines for optimum shade.

I did 7 anchors on purpose ... I wanted a total of 6, plus a spare. And, 7 is a lucky number albeit odd.
Seriously, the performance of these DIY anchors exceeded my expections.
