I think it was the city skies. 15min prior to this I couldn’t make it out at all. For me it was supposed to be visible 1hr - 45min before sunrise, and 5am was exactly 1hr before.
Yesterday I was out for a hike and I thought I might have better luck, given that I was way away from any city. Unfortunately, it was partly cloudy, and one particularly stubborn cloud refused to leave the area of the comet. :(

Fog and no wind made the ocean look more like a frozen lake

Two more, shot on the rare nights when the wind has shifted the smoke away...

A couple of summer nebula taken just before the wildfire smoke hit. These are great. You must live in/near an area that has decent dark skys.

Monday was blue and warm and lovely. Tuesday we woke to an orange tint to the light and hot, windy weather and then it stilled and the smoke continued rolling in until dark fell about three in the afternoon, along with a lot of ash

^ Ugh. Stay safe! In more humorous news: western Pennsylvania's finest! Driving back from a hike I came upon this closed railway crossing. 5min and the stupid train was still rumbling past, when I noticed something unusual about the car that was parked first in line. It looked like it was stuck under the gate! Ahhh, I wish I'd been there to see how it happened. Anyway, after the train finally passed, the gate lifted and the car was set free. Western Pennsylvania's finest

swimswithtrout, have you seen the winning “Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2020“ photo? It does a tilt-shift lens treatment to the Andromeda galaxy which is pretty cool. I’m not generally a fan of that effect but it works here. www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-54105085
