My first hike I just use a map sold near the hiking site. To answer this inquiry I believe AllTrails and Backcountry Navigator will serve best when cell sites are good. Other apps to consider are Map My Hike,

To answer this inquiry I believe AllTrails and Backcountry Navigator will serve best when cell sites are good. If you have to depend on cell service for mapping, to be blunt, that is bad suggestion. That said, I'm quite sure Backcountry Navigator doesn't rely on connectivity (maps pre-downloaded)

I began using GPS for the first time about a year ago. In researching Android smartphones, reviews noted models vary in how well they receive and lock to the satellite signals and the moto g I bought cheaply for $225 rated high as Motorola has a long history of strong engineering in that technology. I have 3 GPS map aps and once running none have ever dropped signals even though I have used it in very complex terrain like Death Valley badlands down in narrow ravines.
I bought the Trimble Navigator Outdoors app including a 32gb topographic map SDcard for the whole state of California that allows me to view topos anywhere in the state even out of satellite range or in airplane mode. The maps also show type of public and private land ownership parcel boundaries when that info is available. That has been very useful especially identifying BLM lands that are often not posted on fence boundaries so. However Trimble is eliminating that consumer level program and support as their business is commercial and industrial focused. The remaining standalone smartphone GPS functionality becomes rather primitive. Thus I will need to load a different application soon and given input here thank you will look at the Gaia app. Note I already loaded Backcountry Navigator a year ago but for reasons I cannot recall decided to use Trimble instead.

The Gaia GPS app is working quite well on my Samsung Galaxy S7. Download USGS topo for any area you want, drawing the boundaries within a rectangular area large or small. Very easy to use; just start recording and put in waypoints as you like. I haven't fully explored the functions yet.
