Good morning. Last week has been interesting in the Redwoods. davesenesac might know exactly where I mean if I say, “the Boy Scout tree trail on Howland Hill.” But anyway, six redwood trees had fires burning in the tops of the trees. standard procedure has been to cut down the burning tree, which is sad, because redwoods are really fire resistant and can burn and still survive and thrive. Anyway, this morning I’m reading about a new strategy they have tried, and it has been working, in spite of some seriously scary wind gusts this last several days. The fire crew climbs above 100 feet and then installs sprinkler systems and leaves those in the trees. They are working well enough that the 6 fires were down to 3 overnight, with no new starts. The lower access is blocked off, so these are pictures the fire crew shared but I’m impressed. I also know it hasn’t been their only method because we heard the helicopters filling buckets on the Smith River all day.

ix redwood trees had fires burning in the tops of the trees. I had never considered this before. I can see where it would be a problem but how does a fire get started in the tops of the trees in the first? Inquiring minds need to know!!

Good morning (barely) from Mammoth, CA. I'm hanging out for an hour or so at the library between backpacking trips. It was fun to see hikerchick395 last week! So far we've been pretty lucky about the smoke, managing to stay above it for the most part. Here's a teaser photo.

Good morning. Home alone for the first time in forever. The granddaughter and her Dad are camping. I went to visit at the camp and walked in the trees and toasted marshmallows but came home to sleep in my own bed. This afternoon she has meet and greet at the school and Monday they are back to full capacity, full time school. No distance learning option unless you home school. And it’s scary. The morgue is full and just got a refrigerator truck yesterday. Our death (10 in a week) and hospitalizations rate is double (per capita) the California rate.

echo, that’s pretty scary. I’m kind of shocked that schools are going to full-time real classes, with kids both unable to get vaccines and more vulnerable to the the Delta variant. We need a kid-approved vaccine, and soon.

Oh, and I’m home, for a while. Air here is awful, and I’m glad I’ll be heading out to Pickle Gulch soon!

The air here is cool and the light is slightly orange tinted but not bad. rebeccad I hope you have a great time in Colorado. And everyone else lucky enough to be there of course. We did the meet and greet at school. I’m so scared but she is happy. She insisted on wearing the dress she got for first day of first grade and had to wear during a zoom class she could barely stop herself from crying through. Now second grade, dangerous but not as emotionally damaging.

Hi! Early afternoon here but maybe still morning for a few minutes for some of you... It's been gorgeous early-fall weather here this week; Michigan always seems to be aware of Labor Day and what that's supposed to mean weather-wise. Reading/listening to my western friends, I'm so grateful for the air quality (and plentiful water) we have here. It's not often that I'm grateful about being in Michigan but, well, here I am. I've had a very low-key low-motivation summer and kind of shocked that it's September. Getting a short reprieve with son's girlfriend visiting. Giving me a chance to take care of a business trip early next week that I had to cancel last month. Not exactly my first choice for how to spend that short window of opportunity but it will be productive. My puppy's all grown up... 2 years old next month. He's kept me sane this year, loves watching TV with me. Favorites are nature shows and baseball. :D

Good morning, Today I have a 1 pm appointment in Medford at an endocrinologist but I thought a drive over and back in one day would really hurt, so we got a motel and drove over last night. For three weeks I’ve been eating almost nothing but pain meds but we brought the granddaughter and she wanted to swim. I decided to try it, although what hurt me was my hip messing up from the cold at family swim three weeks ago. This time I got in the pool for an hour and then in the hot tub for another 45 minutes and kept marveling that there was no pain at all. Getting out of each was hard, the steps were high and I really had to use the metal railing but “no pain” wow. I barely know the meaning of those words anymore. It’s beautiful here today. jazzmom, your “puppy” is beautiful. I don’t have any furry companions at the moment, and even no parrots anymore, when once I had 12 in my living room. I do have a neighbor cat that comes often for snuggles though. And I agree that it is shocking to find mid September upon us.

echo, hope the endocrinologist does better by you than most of the specialists have so far!

Good morning. The sun is starting to peek over the horizon a bit and welcome us to the first day of Autumn.
Things are pretty calm around here. School has been good for all three grandkids and their classes, but every school site has had to quarantine a class or two, a time or two. 20 positive staff and students put 300 students on a two week quarantine.
My endocrinologist visit was good, but just led to more testing and a follow up in 6 months. It is possible the elevated adrenal hormone is what keeps my blood pressure high, no matter the meds, but no sign of adrenal cancer so good news really.
Glad to hear that Pickle Gulch went well.

echo, glad to hear sort of good news, though still no answers, really. I’m now in Seattle with my Mom, and was happy we arrived in time to celebrate her 93rd birthday with my brothers and most of their families (we each had one son who couldn’t make it). I’ve had a fun time driving and hiking around the west with Second Son, and glad many of you got to meet both my boys at PG.
